Fortune Star just released this on DVD.
It has The Killer and A Better Tomorrow. From your specs, it sounds like they may have changed the title of the box and the supplements a little, but I'm sure the audio and video are identical. |
I didn't know there was a review. Thanks.
The box looks different. I got the specs from this site: http://www.asiandvdguide.com/march2005.cfm |
Nope...
it's a different box. Fortune Star is starting to go the re-release route on some titles.
|
Ah, I see. I misread. This box has A Better Tommorow and The Killer. The other "John Woo Collection" had The Killer and Bullet in the Head.
It sounds like they're just mixing around the titles from previous box sets. You can take the Killer portion of the review I linked above and the Better Tommorow (part 1) portion of this one: http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=14509 I cannot imagine that they've done any new remastering since last year, but it does look like they've thrown in a couple of new interviews. |
These two disc are exactly the same as the ones found in the "A Better Tomorrow" Trilogy and the "John Woo Collection"
|
It would've been curious for a set titled "John Woo's Hero Collection" to not include Heroes Shed No Tears.
|
I have the set with The Killer and Bullet in the Head. I was pretty dissapointed with the transfer on the Killer but I thought the one for Bullet in the Head was good.
|
it's different from the first collection in that it has a 3rd supplemental disc.
the code of bullets segments are the same. the kent tsang and sally yeh interviews are new. dddhouse says its from a new HD remaster..but no one else can confirm it. the big difference here seems to be the deleted scenes. i've never known ABT to have any deleted scenes so i assume its from the Killer. Maybe the ones from criterion or HKL versions? i agree its pretty crazy to rerelease them so soon. hopefully this means we can get a better bullet in the head, maybe with a new hardboiled heh. |
I still think HKL version is still the most representative.
|
Anyone know if the deleted scenes of The Killer in this boxset are the same as the Criterion version? If they are, is the picture quality any different between the two? I want the Criterion version but I can't afford the outrageous Ebay prices and this could be a good way to own those deleted scenes.

I'm looking to pick up some of John Woo's earlier HK work like The Killer, Hard Boiled, Bullet in the Head, A Better Tomorrow, etc. Which region/edition do you recommend I should get? There have been so many releases I'm not sure of which has the best video/audio/extras.
Thanks in advance! |
I think you should consider audio video factor first. The Killer: I recommend HongKong Legends R2 UK. Criterions may have best extras but it's OOP - what's the use? For Hard Boiled - although I have Mei Ah HK DVD, I think R2 UK CE (the newest) is the best based on external reviews. Better Tomorrow 1 & 2, take HK Better Tomorrow Trilogy Boxset. Bullet in The Head - well, I guess HKL R2 again gets plus for extras.
You may want to pick up Heroes Shed No tears as well, from Deltamac HK, but only if you're hardcore fans of Woo, since this title has many flaws but certainly shows Woo's early signature. |

For Hard Boiled, it is claimed that the CE R2 UK is the best - but I can't verify. There's a thread here somewhere explaining specially about this edition, but still lack of extras.
|
I received The Killer and Hard Boiled (both R2) earlier this week. If anyone's interested, I can write a quick review after I get a chance to watch them this weekend.
|
Just ordered the R2 version of Bullet in the Head, I have always wanted to see this movie, it ended up costing 11.57 pounds or over $21 with shipping from amazon.co.uk. (thank you Bush for helping devalue the dollar).
I also have the Meh ah version of Hardboilded and am very happy with it, because it does have the original mono track, and the quality isn't bad either. |
