i saw the movie and god!! i think Romain Duris was badly casted as Arsène Lupin

he was good as the dumb, man next door in l'Auberge Espagnole, but did he wreck my hope of finally getting a good adaptation of AL

And of course, it has NOTHING to do with the other (and probably more famous) Lupin:

Well . . . sort of nothing. Its a long story.

the miyazaki's Lupin is based on the original one (i think)
they're both thieves and you have the castle Cagliostro and the caracter played by Kristin Scott Thomas is Joséphine Balsamo, Countess of Cagliostro, too much of a coincidence i guess

I'd say that the anime version is certanly more well known in North America, Japan and the UK. Pretty much anywhere outside of France.

true, but the coincidence is not where you think it is .
now for the story :
Maurice Leblanc created the character of Arsene Lupin in a serie of novels. Arsene Lupin is a thief as his father was. But Arsene Lupin is also a gentleman, so he lives among aristocracy. When Maurice Leblanc create his Arsene Lupin, the character was already an experienced thief. But a lot of fans asked Leblanc for the origins of Arsene Lupin. So Maurice Leblanc wrote the novel : The Countess of Cagliostro.
Arsene Lupin, young man then, was deeply in love with Clarisse, the daughter of Baron d'Etigues. But the father do not agree for their marriage. And, as Lupin and Clarisse was in secret relationship, Lupin meet the evil Countess of Cagliostro. He soon forgets the young and innocent Clarisse for this most experienced and intriguing woman and she made him what he is.

Jean Paul Salomé took the synopsis of this book for his 2004 Arsene Lupin movie.

As for the animated Lupin.
Monkey Punch created the character of a thief, gentleman and careless that he named Lupin the third. He should be the grand son of the Maurice Leblanc original Arsene Lupin. Lupin the third was made in TV series and in Movies. The most famous movie made by Miyazaki : Cagliostro no Shiro (where we can find the name Cagliostro and the name of Clarisse but the plotline has changed slightly)
What Monkey Punch did not know, that here, in France, Arsene Lupin is a kind of "trademark" so when Lupin the third's TV series and movies came in France, the family of Maurice Leblanc forbid the use of the name of Lupin the third. So the Monkey Punch character changed its name and the most known is Edgar (!)....

Looking forward to this release as I missed it in cinemas. And I have to say I'm one of a minority that quite liked Salome's creaky "Belphegor" movie...

Dazza.
