Brown Bunny Premium Box - Japan

http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=GNBF-7112

Such an odd choice of movie to devote a Premium Box to. Won't the Japanese edition have the entire last 10 minutes of the movie covered in optical censorship?

It is no longer a law that genitals must be censored in Japan. That doesn't mean that the studio won't do it optionally though.

The actual laws are still kind of grey (especially when it comes to male genitalia) and allowing the showing of a penis in imported "art" films is still handled on a case by case basis in Japan. If there is no overtly sexual context to the showing of genitalia, it has a better chance of being allowed, but in the case of BROWN BUNNY, where the genitalia is shown in an explicit sex scene, there is a very good chance that it will have to be censored. Hope I'm wrong though. The laws pertaining to this are getting more lenient, but are still maddeningly vague and also inconsistant to some degree (not really surprising, knowing Japanese culture )

I'm not surprised about a premium box in Japan, because for some reason, Vincent Gallo has large, devoted following in Japan. In fact, BROWN BUNNY was at least partially financed by Japanese investors.

It will be censored. The only movies that gotten no censor was Any Given Sunday and Shindlers List.Art movies allow some extras but they will be cut or blurred out.I think in another 5 years there will be no more of this censorship in Japan. But thats a long time to wait for a uncut copy of Tinto Brass movies

I'm pretty sure it was uncensored in the theater here.
Japanese laws have changed in the last few years.

Just watch Dreamers, Clockwork Orange In the realm of the Senses, or Irreversible over here.
Currently they have been all issued or reissued uncut.

I can see the other three films getting an uncut Japanese release these days, but IN THE REALM OF THE SENSES?? Wow, things really are changing for the better! Was this a theatrical reissue?

Not according to this poster over at the Criterion forums:

I saw it in Tokyo and all one can see for over 5 minutes is a big white circle (which is quite amusing in itself, but slightly defies the point).

If the theatrical release was censored I don't see much hope for an uncensored home video release.

BTW, maybe you read it in Gallo's recent interview with Roger Ebert. That's where I read it.

Do you have a link to that? I imagine it could be quote contentious.

Here's the link to the Sun-Times article:

http://www.suntimes.com/output/eb-fe...y-gallo29.html

It isn't the complete interview (don't know if that's available somewhere yet), just highlights, including the mention of Japanese financing:

"I negotiate with the Japanese financiers that I'll rough through the motel scene... "

Those Japanese limited editions go fast. CDJapan seems to have sold out of their projected allotment, but Amazon Japan still seems to have it available, and at a 20% discount.

I am sure it will be censored cause the scene is a hardcore and straight forward. Not like Irreversible. The theaters did not show it so I doubt the DVD's will have them.

confirmation

I just received the disc in the mail today. I just wanted to confirm that certain shots during the sequence in question are indeed censored. However, the disc does feature something of which I was completely unaware up until this point: commentary from Vincent Gallo. Good stuff. I wonder if the upcoming but still unannounced R1 disc from Wellspring will feature this commentary. In any event, the R1 disc will be uncensored. Fans like myself will have to buy both.

that's excellent...I ordered the dvd and book combination from yesasia, so I should get it this week (the medium sized t wasn't for me...xlarge, maybe)

i saw that a commentary was included, that was on of the original specs, but is it film length? in the past, the japanese discs that i have that listed commentaries were usually interviews.

Yes, the commentary is feature length. I am listening to the last 25 minutes of it right now. I wanted to get the premium box set (or even the dvd/book combo), but I wound up purchasing the dvd by itself. It's great to see the film again. I have been listening to the soundtrack so often during the last few months that it's nice to once again hear the music within the context of the film itself.
