Sweet! Now the wait for DVDAsian to ship mine.
Just managed to get hold of a copy......... sweet!! ;)
If I knew it was going to look that slick, I would have ordered one. :)
Price on YesAsia keeps going up, now at $109.95 from $99.95
What I find odd is that they are still taking orders for this while DVDasian for example stopped taking orders back in october. |
Still available at www.thedvdetective.com

I got mine yesterday. It's amazing. It's quite sturdy and the packaging is nice. The booklet that comes with it is pretty great as well. There are actually 5 commentaries, plus another 7 hours of extras, and the great OST. Just an awesome set.
Mine has shipped from Yesasia today too. I'm selling my regular edition to a friend.
Tempted to get his because I love the film so much... How much better is the transfer on the UE versus the 2-Disc? Are at least the Short Films subbed? What about Harry Knowles commentary?
The commentary is in English (subtitled in Korean). I sincerely doubt anything else will be subbed. The transfer is probably my biggest concern...
Mine was shipped this morning
I've heard that some people have been complaining saying that the rivetts inside the copper case have torn a lot of the cases for the dvds..... so watch out If this is the case, I hope YesAsia are good with returns! |
i've heard the disc freezes when it hits chapter 13.

cooey, given that this set is pretty rare, I doubt they'll send you a replacement. :)
I had no problems with the boxes being damaged, but then again, I got mine in a store. If the packing guy was sharp, he packed it in a way that wouldn't damage the boxes. The rivets do protrude, but you do have a foam insert taking up space inside the box. If the guy put the foam thing next to the hinge, you shouldn't have any problems. (The foam insert is the same size as the SE, so I suppose the makers thought you could put the SE in the UE box, so as to have all your Oldboy stuff in one place.) The box is kind of black, but will probably become a little lighter with time. I took a look at both DVDs. Okay, here goes: The picture. I took some screencaps, and the picture looks better in the UE, I think. The picture has been timed and worked on a little more. The overall picture is a little darker but slightly warmer, and may take away some of the details in the background in some places, but the foreground is much better, and the lighting is less glaring. The framing in at least one scene changed slightly. The SE seemed to have zoomed in of the one scene (the diopter scene with Choi Min-Sik and Yu Ji-Tae near the end). Either that or the UE is slightly zoomed out. You can see extra picture on all sides in the UE. Personally, I like the SE framing better, but this is the UE, so I guess the director is happy with this picture. The picture also has a better feel in the UE. I have the screencaps but don't really have a usable URL. If somebody could be kind enough to supply the bandwidth, I'll supply the pics. As for sound, I listened to one scene, my favorite, the fight scene between Mr. Choi and all the guys. The DTS seems to have a very slight edge. The sound seems just a little bit fuller and smoother. I'm a cinephile, not an audiophile, though, so if you want a better review, you'll have to wait. :) The extras... Kim Min-Seok's short film (not 50 mins, by the way, like dvdfromkorea.com says, it's more like 20 mins) is not subtitled, but Park Chan-Wook's Judgement does have burned-in English subs. Nothing else has subs. The cut scenes, the interviews, the docs, all without subs. The second disk really suffers without subs. The third disk is completely behind-the-scenes stuff, so you don't really need subs to enjoy it. Okay, that's my assessment of the set. |

the green tint in the picture(SE) is gone?
Yes, it's true, according to what I've read at the official OldBoy site (http://oldboy.starmax21.co.kr)
But, it could be due to older dvd players, or anything. BTW, whats the UPC for this?? |
If this is true, then surely Starmax have got to offer a service to replace the DVD free of charge.... it's their cock up at the end of the day
Just reading through 2 new posts on the official site, and there's yet another reports of damaged cases (not ripped opne like some others) and also of the freezing.
The latest person to post about freezing though, has indicated it's at the layer change and said it wasn't too bad. Perhaps the others have older units that don't handle layer changes well. |
