AMITYVILLE 3-D DVD in 3-D (R2)
 

Fangoria's website reports AMITYVILLE 3-D will be re-issued on DVD in the UK on Sept 27th, in a package including both 2-D and 3-D versions and glasses. The disc will also include commentary.

The film was shot in 2:35 to 1 over/under 3-D and released theatrically in polarized format, in which the audience wore clear gray glasses. The 3-D was pretty decent, too. Of all the 3-D films in the 80's (and there were lots more than you think) it was one of the best shot.

Since that isn't practical at home, the DVD will undoubtedly be either a red/cyan anaglyph or ColorCode "conversion", neither of which will look a thing like the original 3-D did. Get ready for more distorted color, ghosting and limited depth like most anaglyphs have. That's too bad, but I am still curious to see what they come up with.

Previous DVD (2-D) releases of this film have all been cropped, some to 1:33 to 1 and others to 1:78 to 1. Worse yet, many of the versions out in R2 and R4 are edited, with the death scene of a major character being heavily truncated and shortened.

Hopefully, the both the 2-D and 3-D versions will be uncut and in the full 2:35 to 1 OAR; and the 3-D version will be converted well enough to make it fun to watch at home.

A new DVD of AMITYVILLE II is due on the same day.

The German R2 Amityville 2 is much better than the old UK version.
It is in Widescreen and Uncut.

Even without the 3-D, the simple fact that the DVD (hopefully) will include a 2.35 widescreen transfer is enough reason for me to go for it. Both the German and Japanese R2 DVDs I've owned of AMITYVILLE 3 have been in 1.85, cropping off the sides.

I never much cared for AMITYVILLE II, but fans ought to go for that too!

I've long wondered why MGM hasnt done a Double Feature DVD of these sequels domestically...
