Wrong.

Some of the interviews on the Bitwin version are in English. Also, the 45 minute making-of on the 2nd disc is narrated in English, with burnt in English subs translating the spoken Chinese, and removable Korean subs. Though the 3-hour behind-the-scenes on the 3rd disc has no English subs, it's sort of irrelevant since it has little to no dialogue.

Does anyone elses "wooden" box say "HREO" on the spine ? It was covered by a small sticker...maybe to hide the spelling error...if it is an error...og maybe HREO means something in Japanese...i dunno....Just thought it was kinda funny

So videowise, the R2 version is superior; audiowise, they are all comparable; extras, the Ultimate Edition is best, and for the full uneditted movie; the extended edition is the way to go?

The extended edition is terrible. If you want a quality copy of the EE, wait a while.

The DVDetective had some of the Hero Limited Edition Japanese Box Set in stock, so I just ordered that. I had planned to order the Ultimate Edition, since it seemed like the best overall one still available, but when I saw the Japanese Box Set (the one with the figures, postcards, etc), I jumped at it.

Can't wait for it now!

Hi,

I'd like to purchase the R2J Hero version from Elite Group. I don't care for the extras just looking for good PQ/AQ. I found two versions on cdjapan:

Hero R2J Regular Edition

Hero R2J Special Edition

If the Video quality and Audio quality are identical except for the extras I'd prefer to purchase the regular version. Can anyone comment?

Thanks.

DrGerbil 02-16-05 03:38 AM

The second disk is not entirely worthless... a few interviews are conducted in English and the 'Making of' is also of some value.

I would get the two-disk, but the single is perfectly suitable as there is nothing on the second disk you can't live without.

I only have the single-disc Elite version that was released at the end of January, which I purchased after two DVDTALKERS confirmed that it was the same as the 2-disc Elite. I don't have the 2-disc version to compare, but judging by the quality of the transfer and by the obvious differences in color timing that the DVD Beaver comparison reveals, I'm certain that the single-disc Elite release is the same as the 2-disc. The image quality is clearly superior to my Edko disc.

Thanks for the confirmation guys. What's the cheapest place to find the R2J Hero DVDs?

Richard Malloy 02-16-05 12:57 PM

I'm not sure about the absolute cheapest, but if you've never purchased from Amazon.jp before, there's a 500YEN-off deal for first-timers. Just follow this link, and it should load the "Hero" page with the 500YEN taken off:
http://www.amazon.co.jp/exec/obidos/...037690-4938647

The checkout is mostly in English, but you'll encounter one odd Japanese term (I forget exactly -- it's apparently requesting a phonetical spelling of your name)... just type your name into it. And while it says that regular shipping can take as long as 3 weeks, I got "Hero" in about 6 days, shipped to Boston.

Thanks Richard. After I totaled the shipping and everything it came out slightly higher than cdjapan. I'm not in any rush, so I think I'll keep my eye for another R2 release and order together.

well I ordered the regular single disc edition from cdjapan, but i paid the cheap way so i hafta wait awhile =( After buying several special edition korean and japanese movies lately with extras that aren't subbed in english I'm starting to think I"m just wasting my money (Old Boy, Friend/Chingu, Infernal Affairs, My Sassy Girl, Silmido, Battle Royale). So I went with the regular edition and I'm thinking I might as well buy/rent/borrow the Miramax edition for extras, seems like the best combo right ? even if the R1 doesn't include extras in others, at least I can enjoy it/understand it =)

boy, do I need to learn some new languages...

The term is "furigana". Basically this is for Japanese people to type their name using hiragana characters (instead of the usual kanji characters). Other people can leave that field blank (or yes, just type their name again).

Well, I don't even have time to watch the extras on my R1 DVD's. I still have shrinkwrapped movies I have to get to. I'm not really big into the extras and stuff unless it's extended version of the movie or alternate ending. The single disc will be fine for me, as long as the PQ is good.

any news on a new transfer of the extended edition???
