Who you gonna call? The Real Ghostbusters in Region 2!

Sweet Merciful CRAP! I was going my usual sweep of what's coming out soon in the UK, when I found these:

http://www.sendit.com/img/video/cove...0/09/25/79.jpg http://www.sendit.com/img/video/cove...0/09/25/78.jpg

Disc one contains Ghostbusted, Knock Knock, Venkman's Ghost Repeller's, Adventures In Slime And Space while disc two has The Spirit Of Aunt Lois, Beneath These Streets, Ragnarock And Roll (YESSS! The BEST episode of the series), and Sea Fright.

Ok, the cover art flat out sucks and a full season set would be preferable - but that's a DAMN fine episode selection, and both discs will run 20 bucks (give or take). Since this is my holy grail of cartoons on DVD, I dont care how it gets here, just so long as it does.

Oh yeah, Slimer goodness. Thats the stuff!

***EDIT***
Silly me, I forgot to include the links: Disc 1 and Disc 2. Now, go and enjoy.

I would love season box sets of this series. Even though I was a freshman in high school when it was on, I remember it being a very smart animation series.

not that bad of a price for these either. I also wish they had them in a season set, because I watched this show every morning as a kid, great show.

Anyone remember that other Ghostbusters cartoon (which was the reason that one was called The REAL Ghostbusters)? I remember it being very cheesy, and a gorilla was one of the ghostbusters. Other than that, it's all a blur.

Interesting to see they're releasing this on DVD. I wouldn't think there'd be a huge market for it, but it's interesting none the less.

Yeah, the show was called "Ghost Busters" (2 words), and that somehow was enough to get away with violating the original studio's copyright. The characters had an old-fashioned jalopy of a car that could talk and fly.

Very much a silly kiddie show, but the damn theme song is burned into my brain to the point where I can't think of the original Ghostbusters without the song popping into my head.

"Let's go, Ghost Busters. Let's go, LET"S GO!!!"

The Ghost Busters cartoon was based on a 1975 CBS Saturday morning show staring Larry Storch, Forrest Tucker, and...a gorilla.

Yeah, heres how it went:

Mid-70s saw The Ghost Busters with Storch and Tucker. Towards the end of production on the '84 Ghostbusters, someone remembered "Hey, wasnt there a kids show 10 years ago with the same name?"

They quickly set about securing the rights from Filmation, while entertaining other names (Ghost Breakers and so on). Of course they did get the rights, and made a shitload of money.

Filmation, seeing their 10 year old property suddenly worth bank, did their own cartoon version of the live action show, retaining the Ghost Busters name for their own usage. Thus the Real Ghostbusters was born to get around that little problem.

JMS even poked fun at the Filmation version, with an episode about fake ghostbusters during their first season.

So my discs arrived yesterday. I didnt get a chance to watch them all - just Ragnarok 'n Roll (and skimmed the rest) - so I cant give you a FULL report, but I've got a good idea what the disc is like.

As near as I can tell, the episode was complete. The only change I could spot was some text in the end credits. I don't seem to re - "Available on Videotape through Magic Window" wasn't there in the version I recorded off the air a million years ago. Oh - it didn't have the "We now return to the Real Ghostbusters" bumpers at the commercial breaks.

The video looked pretty good, all things considered. It's not as good as Rhino's restored offerings of Joe and Transformers, but it's a step up from my fuzzy off the air recordings from 15 years ago. The audio sounds barely stereo, but it's clear and serviceable.

No extras to speak of - in fact just two menu options: "play all" and "episode select". No chapter stops, save for the beginning of each episode.

So, in short - great episode selection at a bargain price, a bare bones release that looks better than VHS but not as good as other restored cartoons from the era.
