Is "The Blind Swordsman: Zatoichi" out on DVD?

There are so many iterations of the Zatoichi saga that I am confused, but is the one that will hit US theaters on 7.23 out on DVD that can be purchased by us mortals? Kind of like the "Hero" movie which I have on DVD before it hits theaters. I wasn't sure. Can someone help me out? Thanks.

The 2003 Film's title was expanded to include "The Blind Swordsman" so to answer your question: yes, the film is out on DVD.

It's been available on DVD in Japan since March. Here's the R2 Japan version (the one I got):

http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/(mint,with_...?KEY=BCBJ-1811

The film has English subs, but unfortunately, the extensive extras do not (the extras are on a second disc that is only included in the first pressing. Not sure if this is still the version CDJapan has or not. Probably though). There is also a R3 HK version available that is less expensive.

Here's the HK one:

It works out to around $16 or $17 US. From what I've heard, the quality is comparable to the Japanese disc.

Yes, the R3 has DTS, but I don't know any details regarding if it sounds better than the Japanese disc. The film is very good, but I wouldn't compare it to Kill Bill (which I loved). Some have complained about the film being slow, and I guess it is, if one is expecting an all out action film, which this definitely is not. You might want to look up some reviews of the film to see if its the type of film you would like to see.

ok...

i would recommend plumping for the HK disc : the japanese one was apparently miscropped / framed... the HK is superb : greta quality in every department. correct title is actually just "zatoichi" ... you can get the 2 disc HK from www.dddhouse.com but just as cheap (and including free postage) is www.cd-wow.com for 8.99 : very good for byuing single cheap dvds (especially top HK titles) ... very good service at bothe companies... alot of people are importing many countries discs (like hkflix.com etc) and dont work out that cheap ... if your willing to wait a few days longer then go for a supplier in the country of issue (cd-wow is actually a HK based company with a fully english site)...

It's the same as the other releases. In fact the Japanese DVD has better picture quality, but it's not as though it's a huge improvement.

I was under the impression that the transfer on the Japanese disc was just ported over to the HK disc (with the Japanese transfer being a bit better due to better compression or higher bit rate). Just curious, where did you hear that it was misframed?

i have the HK and the japanese dvd, i only got the HK for the dts and watch that one more than the japanese disc.. great film btw. about the thai dvd, there may be a typo in the ad, as far as i know, and with every thai dvd, i have bought, they are always PAL. but then again, stranger things have happened. you can always mail it back if it advertised wrong.

There have been some NTSC titles to come out of Thailand,
but I can't say for sure on their copy of ZATOICHI.

I personally only saw the Japanese R2 rental copy, which was good, but I didnt get to see the extra material.

It seems that the R3 HK release is the best one out there,
since it has all the extras from the Japanese release, plus DTS.

I don't know about the legitimacy of the Thai version,
but most all the Region 0 versions on ebay are bootlegs
