One more addition... maybe "The Floating Landscape" would qualify.

This is an awesome film, ranks right up there among the best as far as I'm concerned.

Can someone provide a link to The Love Letter? I'm finding several movies w/that name.

I think the ending of Christmas in August is a quite happy one.

A Tale of Two Sister is a heartbreaking movie.

How about Stanley Kwan's Lan Yu?

I also recommend Yonfan's PEONY PAVILION

Just saw "The Uninivted" (Korean).....pretty damn depressing.

I second ...ING, that was a wonderful movies. Just watched it last night. Some more of my favorites are Juliet In Love, Fly Me to Polaris, Ditto, Christmas in August, Comrades Almost a Love Story, Wong Kar-Wai's movies (I don't think Days of Being Wild was mentioned), A Gambler's Story (another Francis Ng movie, very sad ending), and perhaps The Floating Landscape, which was pretty good.

Takeshi Kitano's Dolls is another great sad love story that is usually overlooked.

Hmm, I guess I'm a bit more picky considering I lived in Korea for nine years. I didn't find Il Mare that sad, it was just a good flick. And yes, JSA is a good pick but the Kim Kiduk films that were mentioned are more bizarre than sad.

There is a Korean movie called "My Heart (Jeong)" that is supposed to be sad. And another movie that had Korean audiences in tears was "Oasis," a movie about an ex-con who hooks up with a woman with cerebral palsy.

I also remember this one HK movie "Call Girl '92" about a gorgeous housewife (Shayla Cheung Man) who becomes a call girl after she leaves her philandering husband. It left me in a pretty bad mood. Also check out "Judou" with Gong Li.

The only heart-wrenching Kim KiDuk top off my head is ADDRESS UNKNOWN. ;) Try this one!

Dream Lovers with Chow Yun Fat and Bridget Lin:

"my love my not compare with the 1000s of years of hers but my love is still love"

Rouge with the late Leslie Cheung and Anita Mui:

"she waited fifty years for his love"

Of course there is also Crouching tiger hidden dragon which has two love stories making up the heart of the movie ... and you all thought it was just Kung Fu.

Kim Kiduk's films include:

Bad Guy - a pimp forces a sweet girl into prostitution; the ending is a damn sick joke

Real Fiction - a drama that plays out with a very twist ending

Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter...and Spring Again - Buddhist film that is by far his best work

Birdcage Inn - another bizarre and sometimes offensive film about a girl who works as a hooker at her relatives' motel (yeah, sick, isn't it?)
