please suggest a great foreign action flick to show off the system!
well, gonna have a few guests over this weekend...
i wanna show off my FP system, but don't want to use the usual american action flicks (they've already seen them all!) i want something different...but it really needs to be HIGH OCTANE action (preferably with good picture and sound quality). hk, chinese, japanese, korean, anything is fair game... any suggestions would be appreciated! thanks. |
ummm i posted this in the international forum intentionally, to avoid the usual american action flicks (read my original post)...
hk, chinese, japanese, korean, etc (not american!) :) |
Taxi 2 would be a good start. Fun car action.

John Woo's THE KILLER
A few other HK action movies that I like: Storm Riders Purple Storm Hard Boiled A Better Tomorrow |
regarding storm riders, thats one that i had considered (haven't seen it yet myself), but do you think the action is too "cartoonish" or too cheesy? i've heard the cgi totally overwhelms the movie and that there is little to no storyline.
what do you think? |

Anime wise: the opening 8 minutes of Blue Submarine No. 6 series had my jaw on the floor - amazing animation and a kinetic hyperactive soundmix, that leaves your senses spinning |
any other suggestions??
:) |
- Hero
- The Returner (I didn't like the movie much, but it has a few scenes that might be fun to show off) - Wonderful Days (Korean) - Hard Boiled - Versus (very fun action scenes) - Battle Royale - Ong Bak (if you want cool fights, there is no better movie) |

Crash Landing, basically a Mainland remake of the Airport disaster movie. Story is a little cheezy (like Airport), but the DTS track rocks the house and the video quality (PAL) is very good on my small setup. However, I don't know if the HK release has the DTS track and I don't see the original release listed anymore.
According to layoyo, the HK version does have the DTS track. http://us.yesasia.com/assocred.asp?C...c/version-all/ http://www.layoyo.com/cgi-bin/ncomme...251&LANGUAGE=1 Otherwise, I'd second the Hero (Edko version) recommendation. Green Tea, dp'd by Christopher Doyle and sound design by Wu Lala is a treat for the right (art house) crowd and Vickie Zhao Wei fans. |
Avalon. Isn't totally an action movie, but it does have some great action scenes, and a kick ass DTS 6.1 track on the Korean dvd.
|
SHIRI. It's a Korean movie from a few years ago. Heavily influenced stylistically by movies like The Rock. Lots of intense gunplay and stylish cinematography. The storyline is similar to Hollywood films, so people who don't like foreign films can probably still digest this one.
Best of all, Columbia Tristar released a beautiful region 1 disc and it should be available in most stores. |
So Close, everyone will be impressed with your front projection, the dvd is very nice, the visuals are very nice.
Hero is very good to show off the visuals and surround sounds, I particularly like the fight in the forest with the leaves. Ong Bak has great fight scenes, the overall film though is ok, I didn't find it visually "sharp" in video quality. Twins Effect is pretty good, though many do not like it. |
Another vote for Hero.

they've (my guests) have already seen Hero!
:) thanks for all the replies! keep 'em coming... |
Wonderful Days
Musa Tube Taxi 1-3 Hero Volcano High Azumi Returner |
man, i saw volcano high last weekend...
what a waste of time...silly, silly , silly. fight scenes got old really quickly...same old "air blast wave thingy" over and over again. i couldn't figure out if it was a comedy or action movie...guess it was both, but the "comedy" was just plain stupid. not my cup of tea. |
how is tube? the premise seems kinda cool, but does the movie come through?
|
Another vote for Wonderful Days, Musa, & Hero. Warriors of Heaven & Earth - would be perfect as a double bill w/ Musa.
|
How about 2009: Lost Memories? This is a very good sci-fi action from Korea.
Ringo Lam's Full Contact is also considerably good. |
Another vote for Musa, Hero and Wonderful Days.
Wonderful Days would show off your systems BEAUTIFULLY, but movie enjoyment may vary. Azumi has a terrific transfer and excellent sound, but is a truly lousy movie with the exception of a powerful beginning. 8 Diagram Pole Fighter, the newly "restored" DVD, looks phenomenal for an older flick and is a good demo to show old stuff looking new again (gorgeous transfer). Oldboy has a good transfer and is a phenomenally fun movie. Great coloring. Zatoichi (2003) has a very good transfer, it deliberately looks muted but it comes across beautifully none-the-less. Very good movie as well. And, I've never seen it, but I hear Natural City has a lovely transfer. |
My vote goes to Musa (the UK disc), Hero (Edko r.3), and the Columbia Tristar r.1 releases of Shiri and Time and Tide

The sound on Tube ROCKS. Ditto for Natural City. It's not often you get a full bitrate DTS track, but Natural City has one and the sound is incredibly rich. Tube's sound and picture are topnotch but the money is kind of corny. That DTS-ES track really comes through nicely. Same for Volcano High. The sound is awesome, but the movie gets worse as it goes on.
Wonderful Days is a definite demo movie. Sound/picture quality are perfect. Try to get the LE, it's longer and a bit better. You won't get a better movie to show off your new system. Some complained about the story being silly, but the movie really should be longer. I liked it a lot. I liked Returner but the sound could have been better. I heard the opening sequence to Lost Memories and the DTS track was kind of front-loaded, even for all the gunfire. I thought the sound on So Close kind of sucked. Far too few surround effects for that movie. I own the Korean R3, but I read the R1 is better. Haven't seen Shiri or Time and Tide or Legend of Zu or Full Contact on a 5.1 system yet, so I can't comment on those. The DTS track on Mei Ah's remastered Hard Boiled wasn't what I was expecting. I thought it would be better. One of the best DTS tracks I've ever heard is from A Tale of Two Sisters. The picture is also awesome. It's a horror flick, though, not an action movie. High octane action movie with good picture and sound. I'd recommend Tube, but the movie is cheesy. It's a runaway subway movie, so the pace is really fast, but thanks to the direction the suspense sometimes loses steam. The sound and picture really show off your system, though. Wonderful Days shows off your system all the same, but it's less of an action movie than Tube. |
Any hints on a good retailer for Crying Freeman? It looks intriguing. Normally I'd pick something like that up from ehit or netflix, but alas... neither has it. (Though netflix has the anime)
Also, got an email from YesAsia yesterday that they can't complete my Oldboy order due to lack of stock. :( |
