How Many Versions of Dogville? Which one to get?
See Topic, thanks.

Anyone?

if you do a search you would come up with a half dozen threads that clearly indicate what are the available versions out there. Here's the one that came quite some time ago....with the first and in my opinion best version of Dogville-Danish R2.
http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthr...light=dogville I think that that is why no one responded to your question :) korean OOP LE http://211.234.93.143/image/dvd/dvd006367_1.jpg Danish :up::up: http://www.dvdoo.com/dvdoo/images/mo...ville2dk_f.jpg French- http://www.dvdrama.com/imagescrit/dogvillez2hd.jpg Italian- (Medusa version) http://www.afdigitale.it/edisport/af...ElemFormat=jpg Dutch/Benelux http://www.dvdzone2.com/pictures/big/128448.JPG German- http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P...3.LZZZZZZZ.jpg British-upcoming http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P...2.LZZZZZZZ.jpg Spanish-upcoming http://www.dvdgo.com/images/products...0000108325.jpg This should do it.....:wave: Pro-B |
Why is it that Koreans always create incredibly hot editions and then put out 4 or 5 of them? I mean, was this set ever really IN PRINT? Oh well, maybe the world is just too fast for me!
I have the Danish edition - it's probably first runner-up to the Korean. BUT: if you are superlow on money, just get ANY version, since this is one of my TOP5 of 2003! S |
I wouldn't say the Danish edition is first runner-up to the Korean but rather the other way around. All of the extras on disc 2 of the Korean release do NOT have English subtitles unlike I believe the Danish edition. Also, the Korean release does NOT have the 50 min "Dogville Confessions" documentary by Sami Saif that's present on the Danish SE. The Korean LE which I've only seen on ebay now does have the screenplay included though.

Before placing the Korean set as your top choice I would consider this-
"Dogville’s Region 3 Korean DVD is a fully licensed product and not a bootleg, but you might have some trouble telling from the transfer. The three-hour film has been highly compressed, and the quality is only slightly better than the stuff sold on street corners. Colors are washed out and compression artifacts run rampant. Scenes that are supposed to be pure black are instead peppered with these artifacts, making them look all distorted. If you can wait, I’m sure hoping other releases—such as the eventual Region 1—will look much better." Full review here- http://www.cinenikki.com/Pages/DVD/DogvilleRegion3/ As I mentioned in another thread while this review is a bit too extreme but it perfectly captures my sentiment towards the video presentation of the film. The image is deceptively "sharp" and digital compression/artifacts are indeed an issue. Regardless, decide for yourself. Pro-B |
How Many Versions of Dogville? Which one to get?
The cheapest! Terrible film. I'm a fan of the director but I hated Dogville. It was shot on digital video which was a bad start and it was downhill from there. If you have already seen the film and liked it then the Danish release (which I had) is very impressive because it's designed for an English speaking audience. |
Hello. There will be two Spanish editions. One with only the edited cut of the film and another with the original cut, the edited and a third disc full of extras.
You can check the contents as well as the digipack here (in Spanish). |
Ok, I just thought those fancy extras accompanied an even better transfer - but thanks for clearing up the situation, pro-B and meritocracy.
Daniel, I don't think the thread-originator needed that kind of "help" - I mean, we could certainly argue about the pro's and con's of shooting digital video but: don't tell me this is bothering you when watching the movie. I mean, I saw it at the movie theatres TWICE, and it actually looked excellent! S |
I like films because they look filmic. If I wanted to see videos I'd watch MTV.
That's an opinion of course and it's totally valid. |

I'd also recommend the Danish version

Anyone know where I can buy the Danish version?
(Thanks for all of your help BTW) |
I use Laserdisken.

It is a shame that they put only English stereo in Spanish R2. Could have been the best edition so far.

For example, in DVDGo, it is announced as having both DD5.1 and 2.0 in both languages. Also, the original/extended cut will feature DD5.1 in English only (no dubbing). Apart from that, something very strange: Manga has informed that the extras that are in Danish will have optional English subs. The only possibility seems to wait until July the 7th to know the true specs. |

I don't know if it is a good price but I got an email from DiabolikDVD.com that the Dogville 2 disc Korean (R0 NTSC) is on sale for 21.99.
I don't think I paid more than a few dollars for the LE version of that though, so it probably isn't a great deal. Thought someone might be interested. |

I realize this is the INTL forum, but how does the upcoming R1 release stack up?

Spanish edition review
Here's the review of the Spanish Collector's Edition.
To sum up for those who can't read Spanish: - 2 versions of the movie: cinema and extended original one - Lars Von Trier's audiocommentary on the "extended version" of the film - More than 2 hours of special features with English subs on those wich are not English spoken Comparison with Danish edition (info taken from Rewind): Both editions feature: - Extended version of the film (170 minutes) - Selected audio commentary with director/writer Lars von Trier, and cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle (for five scenes) - Theatrical trailer - "Dogville confessions (53:19 min)" -documentary - "Trier, Kidman & Cannes (23:29 min)" -featurette - "Dogville test (6:05 min)" sequence, with alternate commentary Interviews (2x Nicole Kidman, Stellan Skarsgard, Anders Refn, Vibeke Windelov, 2x Lars von Trier) - "Confessions (17:53 min)" -featurette - "Visual effects (8:29 min)" -featurette, with alternate commentary - Press conferences: -Trollhattan 2002 (10:12 min) -Cannes 2003 (20:52 min) -Meeting the Danish press in Cannes 2003 (3:21 min) Only in the Danish edition: - Poster gallery Only in the Spanish edition: - Cinematographic version of the film (143 minutes) Overall: I'd go for the Spanish edition as it has the shorter cut of the film, almost the same extras and presentation is great: http://www.dvdenlared.com/img/fotos/...splegable1.jpg Also, Spanish edition will be widely available when it comes out on July the 21st and is 6 € cheaper. Maybe I'm not very impartial about this, but this is one of the very few times that a Spanish company does a great job! |
The review doesn't concretize what the English, original, track is like. But if there are only 2 tracks and the first one is DD 5.1 Spanish dub, the second one should be English stereo. What a shame.
