Toho to release the MOTHER OF ALL GODZILLA BOX SETS!

Everything from the 1954 original to 2003's Godzilla, Mothra, Mechagodzilla: Tokyo SOS! They're even including the Americanized Godzilla King of the Monsters in the set, a nice touch.

Read about it here, check out the coverart here. No word about English subs yet, but if there are I'm going to be in financial trouble!

A 30 disc set? Considering how much Toho discs cost, can you imagine how much this will be?? A $1000.00 price tag is certainly possible. I'm actually hoping there won't be English subs. Otherwise, I will have to buy this, and my wife will kill me.

I'm a Godzilla fan, but not that much of a fan. Unless my landlord says I can skip paying rent for a month, I'll have to pass.

Let's not 'pssh' about the price until they release how much it will actually be. I'm freakin' drooling over here, 30 Godzilla films? Good lord!

Any word on when this literal monstrosity will be released? (I read the article, but someone might know something else.)
Personally, I'm looking forward to Ryuhei Kitamura's rendition of Godzilla more than this set. I actually kind of wish they'd wait until the newest one gets on DVD and include it in the set.

As for the price, let me figure it out... I paid, on average, about 50 bucks per Japanese DVD I own (they're all LE's, though). So, let's say 40 bucks per dvd, for 27 movies, that makes, what... 1080 bucks? DVDs in box sets are usually less expensive, so that would bring the price down to, say, 700. The inevitable nifty packaging Japanese companies go for would raise the price again, say 850. I hope I'm way off. (Hey, it's 1:30am and I can't go to sleep. I have to do something to bore myself silly.)

Let's hope they release them like the last 3 Columbia/Tristar editions, whereas they had subtitles (even though the subtitles were a translation of the English dubs, not the Japanese language).

The only way to really get the enjoyment is to watch and hear the movie as it was supposed to. Dubbing cuts out alot of sound and adds it.

Any serious sci fi DVD collector will get these...time to retire the LD's!!!

I would not even consider buying because I don't want a majority of the films to be in the box. I'm only interested in the very early films.

I'll be the risk taker here and I'll say like, 350 bucks. 400 max. My original guess was 300 but, meh. The godzilla fans are dwindling and they are not really gaining a new audience. It's time to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Godzilla by throwing these things all together, and sell it at an affordable price in one gigantic box set. Anything more than $400 won't sell most likely, as even the people who like the Godzilla films, won't be the DVD afficionados most of us are, and shell out more than that for a box set of the Godzilla flicks. I wouldn't be surprised if they also make a lot of this set double sided discs or whatnot, after all, 27 films is a LOT, and they will probably want to condense as much space as possible. They could probably put a lot of the older films, like two on each side of the discs.

The website did say 30 disks. My guess is they're all DVD-5s.

Remember, their market is Japan. These are R2 discs (an equivalent R1 box set would be impossible, since the rights to various G movies belong to different companies). Any sales they would get from the US would be secondary (which is why we have to hope for English subs). The reason why R2 discs from Japan cost so much is because things in general cost more over there (from what I hear). So, whatever $400 converts to in yen, I'm pretty sure it is too low an estimate.

This site has another view of the box set (scroll down). It looks freakin awesome!

Also notice the price (99750 yen), which the Monster Zero board says is nearly a grand US. Someone on that board estimated the price of the R2s individually to be around $1600.

Still no word on English subtitles....

The article says November 11 @ about $920.

My kids love Godzilla and I'd love to have widescreen, subtitled versions of these flicks but I can't pony up that much for it.

Also, as I recall, Toho is notorious for a lack of English subs.

$918.00 to be more specific; much better than the $1600 for the individuals. It will be interesting to see what extras are on the bonus discs. Both GMK and G vs Megaguirus had box sets that contained bonus discs, so having that material plus some additional would be nice. Although not really a reason to get it, the box set is also nice since they are all in the same packaging, since the R2 releases have been in a mix of jewel cases as well as normal DVD casing.

So . . . tempting . . .

Holy. Friggin. Crap.

In a way, I'm actually hoping there *won't* be English subs. That'll make it easier to resist.

Toho is notorious for releasing its G-films in Japan without English subs. I very much doubt this set will represent an exception to the trend.

Adding subs would require reauthoring 27 movies, as most of these are out on DVD in Japan already. There's no way in hell Toho would ever spend that much for a rerelease (although they should).

99750 yen....yay, my guess about the price was the closest! That means I win a free box set, right?

I'm curious if these will be the original Toho discs in new packaging (in which case, no subs) or if they will master new discs for this (in which case, slim chance for subs, but still not likely, based on Toho's past actions).

At any rate this will be very tempting for me. Unfortunately, I also collect Godzilla toys, and I'm expecting Bandai to go all out this December with tons of new toy releases. Oh oh, my wallet is scared.

I would spring for a giant Godzilla like the one I had as a kid. The biggest ones I've seen around are all 12", which hardly seems Godzilla-worthy.
