Zatoichi HK vs KR?

Mods feel free to delete this if it's in the wrong place.

Hi guys, did a search earlier but I couldn't find any info on the quality of the HK Panorama DVD vs. Korean 2 disc. Does anyone know if the HK is anamorphic and how's the image quality? Thanks.

The HK is not anamorphic, while the Korean is. First looks at the Korean dvd on other forums suggest the film dvd is a direct port of the Japanese dvd, with added Korean subs.

Ack. And I went and ordered the HK one and it's on its way. Ah well. Guess it doesn't matter to me as much, since I don't have a widescreen TV and all.

Anybody know if either the HK or Korean DVDs will have English subs on the extras?

I ordered the one from CDWOW. Merely beacuse I got it cheap for only 6.99 shipping included with discount link and a free e-voucher.

The parcel wont ship out before the 26th so no word yet how good/bad this version is.

Anyone whos got CD-WOW version, please post your thoughts.

When you get the HK disc, can you let us know the quality of the extras, and if its worth it. I am thinking of picking up the HK disc for the subtitled extras, also.

Hmm, the R2 Jap dont have DTS whereas the R3 HK does have DTS. However, the HK version is a non-anamorphic.

When you say it's non-anamorphic .. do you base that on hearsay or facts ? I mean do you actually own the DVD ? The reason I'm asking is i I just heard it really is anamorphic.... the HK edition that is.

Update!! Apparently, the R3 HK version from CD-WOW is indeed anamorphic. They have just changed it.

And this R3HK has DTS as well, which the R2 Jap version doesnt have.

I wish DVDBeaver would make one. This is a title right up their alley.

DVDBeaver looked at the Japanese disc http://207.136.67.23/film/DVDReview2/zatoichi-2003.htm

I've compared both and the Region 3 is the winner because it has great DTS sound and is much cheaper.

I couldn't see any difference in the images.

Ok, so is it confirmed that the HK version is anamorphic? And the HK version is the only one with subtitles on the features, right? If that's all correct, then the HK disc sounds like the one to get.

Are there any reviews for the HK version?

Does anyone know for certain if the HK version is uncut? I remember there was some question about the running time, but that may have been a mistake in the listing similar to CD Wow saying it wasn't anamorphic.

You guys like messing around!

The Region 3 (HK) is uncut (I've never heard of any cut version -what would they cut?) and it's anamorphic.

There's no English subtitles on the 2nd disc either.

Are there any reviews for the HK version?

See my post.

DAMNIT! That was going to be my only reason to pick up this disc, I will just stick with my JP release.

Yes, if you have the Japanese disc the only reason to double buy would be the DTS sound.

I enjoyed the film so much I didn't bother with the 2nd disc. There are much more extras (no subtitles either) on the Japanese disc too. The HK extras disc (which is limited apparently) is nothing to get excited about except for the film (mine had a set of three postcards incidentally).

A word of warning, it seems the HK disc has a small cut in it...I found this over at asiandvdguide.com

Zatoichi was IIB with only minimal cuts (according to memory, the severed hand at the gambling den didn't make it, and there may've been 1/4 second less of the bad guy's nasty fate.)

anyway im probably gonna pick up the hk vers for dts, but the packaging on the korean version is just damn hot. just wondering for those with the hk version, hows the packaging? is it amaray? is the spine all splattered with logos like the front?

also, is the dts on the hk version a totally big step up from the previous versions?
