Jaume Balagueró's Darkness... where to buy and your thoughts.

This might be old news, but I did not find any posts on this.

I just did a little searching on imdb.com and on upcoming theatrical releases. I then noticed a Spanish horror title, Darkness, by Jaume Balagueró from 2002, which is going to have its release on June 18th. I did a little searching on the web and found this.

Parutions.com - Darkness (2002)

However, I do not read French, but noticed that it had English subtitles. I also wonder if anyone has seen Darkness, and how is it?

I also found it on Amazon.fr, and I assume they are just as good as any other Amazon on the web. However, how much is the usual delivery cost from the French Amazon? Also, what French DVD company would you recommend to order from as Amazon tend to be a little expensive?

Cheers

Or Korean:

Now, of course, the question is which is the best release to get.

I have been eyeing the Spanish dvd at Diabolik for a while now, didn't realize there was a Korean until this thread came up and I searched it out.

Anyone seen either?

I found the Korean to be average at best. Bit of motion blurring and artifacting. Packaging is a bit halfassed as well.

I do not wish to sound biased when considering the Korean market however I believe that many of their European film releases are at best fair PAL/NTSC ports. With some of the French films for example I have seen on Korean discs (as mentioned above) there has been some substantial amount of artifacting.

Some examples of obvious artifacting of European releases-

Blanche
Dobermann
Nid de Guepes

Also without knowing the exact nature of the film and how it might be treated by the censors if there is a scene that is of more delicate nature (obvious examples Irreversible, Taxi, etc) I would always go for a European release of a European film (if possible....the country of origin).

You however are free to make up your mind.

Cheers,

If you live in the US you might want to wait. I read somewhere that Dimension will be releasing it on dvd later this year. I can't place where I read it right now, but it was probably in a recent issue of Video Store Magazine or Video Business.

Rotten Tomatoes & ComingSoon.net lists a limited theatrical release opening June 18th.

You can also rent it at Nicheflix. The carry both the Spanish & Korean DVDs.

I had the Spanish disc and sold it immediately after watching it. Abysmal movie and not a patch on the same director’s superb "Los sin Nombre". Darkness plays like every bad cliched US horror movie and this is only reinforced by being in English.

Truly dire.

You can also go for the cheap Dutch DVD, decent quality and DTS, plus it's the unedited version.

So, I ordered the Korean version, but I don't know if it was actually the "uncut" version or not. It ran exactly 98 minutes. I read all the crap on IMDB about what was supposedly cut for the PG-13 version, and all I could get out of it was maybe the "fucks" were made to "freaks" and a little blood from the walls. What is the actual difference in run times? The Spanish DVD lists the runtime as 102 minutes, but does this have anything to do with PAL? Is the Korean R3 DVD uncut or should I just buy the R2 Spanish disc?

The runtime difference is probably due to PAL.

Both the Korean and Spanish disc are 98 minutes. 102 minutes after accounting for PAL speedup. Looks like the Korean was PAL sourced, again.
