Question about Black Hawk Down Korean Superbit Deluxe

Are the extras in english? Are there any forced subtitles? Thanks!

Yakuza Bengoshi 03-04-04 06:15 AM

Extras are in English. Subtitles are not forced.

Beautiful :)

I received the set last week and it is REALLY nice :)

Does the superbit look better than the US version of this disc?

dvdjoy 03-04-04 10:23 AM

That's the same thing I'm wondering. Looking at the back side DVD artwork on the Korean version, it seems almost identical to the US special edition. I'm wondering if the video for both versions is really identical as well.

Agreed

the R3 also comes with the soundtrack CD (making it a 4-disc set), and much better artwork than the R1 big-head pic of Josh Harnett.

Check out the thread in Bargains. There are some screenshot comparisions on page 6 I believe. Not very big but even small, I see a difference.

Those screenshots are comparing the R3 Korean vs. R2 Japan versions.

Well, if you take out the three commentary tracks from the R1 and put in a DTS track instead, you still have less space to put in the picture than the R1. So theoretically the picture is worse, but sometimes US DVDs don't take up all the space they can, so I'm not sure.

I have noticed that Korean DVDs usually have more audio tracks, or the audio tracks take up more space than R1 audio tracks, which is very silly. So, when the picture could potentially be better in R3 DVDs, they usually put in a DTS track or sometimes two, and that leaves less space for the picture.

Anyway, I have the R1 and I'm happy with it.

Actually, you are wrong.

As I have said, the bitrate for R2J is 6.9Mb/s. That includes English DTS 5.1 (768kb/s), English DD 5.1 (448kb/s), Japanese DD 5.1 (448kb/s), 3 commentaries, each English DD 2.0 (192kb/s).

So that leaves 4.66Mb/s for video in R2J

Assume that R1 bitrate is also 6.9Mb/s (unlikely though), which includes English DD 5.1 (448kb/s), French DD 5.1 (448kb/s),
Spanish DD 5.1 (448kb/s), and 3 commentaries, each English DD 2.0 (192kb/s).

so that leaves 4.98 Mb/s for video in R1

The bitrate for R3K is 6.65 Mb/s, which includes English DTS 5.1 (768kb/s) and English DD 5.1 (448kb/s)

so that leaves 5.33 Mb/s for video in R3K

So in terms of the video bitrate, R3K(5.33) > R1(4.98) > R2J (4.66)

Out of all the versions released, R3K has the best video quality.

Unlike what you said, R3 Korean DVDs usually have LESS audio tracks. The R1 counterparts usually have English/French/Spanish DD 5.1, where as the R3 counterparts can afford to drop the French and Spanish tracks (448kb/s each), put in an English dts track(768kb/s), and still leaves more bitrate for Video.

The audio tracks take up LESS space than R1 audio tracks. Therefore, the picture is be better in R3 DVDs.

The best case scenario would be that R1 version has English/French/Spanish DDd 5.1 track, but the R2 UK version has English DD 5.1 and DTS 5.1. Assume the bitrate are identical for both versions, the R2 UK version will blow the R1 into the water due to higher video bitrate plus the added PAL resolution!!!

pat00139 03-06-04 09:25 AM

Okay, so I didn't know that information. I just figured the bitrate for every region was the same. I did say I didn't know, right? Also, for some reason, the Bourne Identity and Hulk DVDs always stick in my head as having the audio tracks taking up more space... Maybe it's just Universal DVDs...

I'm curious about this, though. I've read that the Equilibrium R3K picture is about the same as the R1 picture. The extras are identical (save for a few previews), but R3K has a DTS track. Maybe the R1 picture was crappy to begin with, I didn't see it on a good TV.

If you're not sure about the R1 bitrate, maybe this'll help. The Criterion Seventh Seal has 2 mono tracks, and has 7.7Mbps bitrate.

Also, maybe this post is getting a bit off topic...

Anyway, I stand corrected...

The R3 from Korea is Superbit, so the picture is probably better than the R1 version, which isn't Superbit. Hey, I just thought of this, what about the 1st Columbia R1 release. Wasn't that mastered in Hi-definition? Wouldn't that picture be better than the R1 3DSE?

BlackBeauty92 03-11-04 11:14 AM

i've watched both R1 version (single & super-duper)....
as far as picture quality, they both look about the same... again in my 27" HDTV, they don't look much different... allot of people said that the super-duper got slightly better picture.... maybe true, maybe not. unless you got big screen HDTV, you might notice that...

the only reason for me to get the superbit is the DTS. i didn't expect picture improvement (the R1 is great in my opinion)... so as long the R3 doesn't have lower picture quality, i'm good...
but this movie was nominated for best sound editing & instead DTS (in R1), we got regular DD? doesn't make any sense...

i've heard people say that the R3 DTS improves allot... & it should be

just my take on this subject

digitalfreaknyc 03-11-04 01:32 PM

So let me get this straight....

You're making a comparison and judgement on a disc you don't own. Am I correct?

I think he's just throwing in his two cents on why he would pick up the R3 Superbit version, re. if he was to pick it up, it would be for the DTS (assuming there is no decrease in PQ).

Otherwise, it doesn't seem like he's criticizing the R3.

were you addressing that question to me or the other guy?

well, i do have the R1 3-disc (upgraded from R1 single disc)

& i got the R3 on order (should be at my place sometime this week if not next week)

Bill Geiger 03-12-04 07:51 AM

I played a little bit of the dvd last night. I had to turn my receiver down due to it being incredibly loud. Given that I live in an apartment, my sound level for DTS was down to 19. The picture looked good and the sound was very good.

I plan on watching the rest today, cranked a little louder due to it being daytime and no one around. Plus, I was falling asleep during the first 20 minutes. That is not a shot at the movie, just something I tend to do a lot during movies when I get comfortable. :)

syphon00 03-15-04 03:05 PM

is the superbit coming to R1 anytime soon?

digitalfreaknyc 03-15-04 09:11 PM

Nope. No sign.

Bill Geiger 03-16-04 09:46 AM

Well, I did watch it. To me the sound was good, the movie wasn't too great in my opinion.

pat00139 04-01-04 10:32 AM

Okay, so I bought the Superbit Deluxe version with the 3 DVDs and the soundtrack. I also have the R1 set.

Does anybody want to try and compare the two, for the sound and picture quality? I don't have the greatest system in the world, but if I do see a difference, then it's definitely a difference worth noting.

Tony Dvdfan 04-01-04 10:35 AM

I think it is definately worth the upgrade. The picture quality is great, same if not better than the R1, but the DTS sound blows the R1 out of the water!
