Thanks for the clarification on the SD-3950, the_dude8. I totally thought it was like the SD-3900.

Still though... what is the best one to get of those 3?

727

I have the 3900 and works like a charm.

Make sure to get the firmware fix and you have no worries, region-free.

The problem with the 727 is the mutiple angle icon. It appears on screen when the option is present and can't be removed. Your stuck for the whole film with this icon in the corner of your screen

my 2 cents.

It only pops up for a few seconds when the option is available. I have the 727 and still haven' encountered it. My older Toshiba player has the same problem, but it's rarely an issue. I wouldn't let this factor into your decision.

As for recommending a player, they are all good choices. Whichever one a person owns, is the one they're going to recommend. The deciding factor for me was the ease of the region hack for the 727 and that the on-screen display shows how much time is remaining whereas the Toshiba only shows time elapsed. It's not a big deal with the movie itself, but with the extras, it's nice to know how long they run ahead of time.

I just ordered the Toshiba 4900 based on the recommendations here (and some good reviews elsewhere. Cheapest I could find it was on Amazon, especially w/ free shipping.

Another advantage of Philip 727 that is non-existent on many other region-free players is its ability to output Pal signals without converting it to NTSC. If you have a projector, you will love the extra scan lines.

This is the reason I decided to keep Philip 727 after trying out the Philip player and Toshiba 4900.

Thanks, I just ordered the Toshiba 4900 from Amazon.
They don't carry the Philips anymore.

Thanks for everyone's feedback.

Sorry to the OP for hijacking the thread.

Is the price difference between the 4900 & 3900 just the DVD-A option ?
