Which version of Failan to get?

I am a Cecilia Cheung fan and I have an all region player. There are so many releases of Faila, which should I get? Thanks for any info.

Chinese Version, HK Version, Korean version or should I try and track down a Korean special edition?

paratize 01-18-04 04:22 PM

I would say go for the Korean 1 disc version, unless you can speak Korean and really like special features and want to spend extra money for the 2-disc Korean edition, not to mention time in tracking it down somewhere (because it is actually out-of-print now). The 1 disc is cheap and has a really nice anamorphic widescreen transfer. Don't buy any HK/Chinese version - they usually have pretty crappy quality. Anyway, hope that helps.

Crazy Aoshi 01-19-04 10:48 AM

Thanks for the info, I'll look for the normal Korean one.

Korean discs are generally superior to HK discs - but there are exceptions.

Tell Me Something
Korean - cut
HK - uncut

Il Mare
Korean - horrendous English subtitles
HK - better subtitles, same picture quality

In the case of Failan, I've read that the China Star HK disc has the superior picture quality, however, it is a single-layer disc with no extras, and no DTS soundtrack.

Crazy Aoshi 01-19-04 01:25 PM

Well I don't speak Korean, but I don't speak Cantonese or Mandarin either and I got Cecilia's music video disc just cause she's on it. I wonder what extras the Korean normal one has.

Does anyone know where I can get the 2-disc Korean version? HKFlix shows it in stock, but when I ordered it I got an email saying they were out. I think I may have waited too long :(

Have you ordered from them before? I have never heard of them. Any info would be greatly appreciated. :)

pro-bassoonist 01-19-04 10:39 PM

...yes...go ahead and place your order. No worries mate!

Paratize,
when was the last time you bought a HK DVD of a recent movie release?

Where did you hear that??? I've never heard or read anything about the Korean version being cut. That'd be stupid, why would they release a cut version of a Korean produced film???

ehonauer 01-22-04 12:39 PM

Although I haven't compared them, the times for the Edko and Spectrum are different (117 vs. 116), and this reviewer refers to a cut scene (see his note at the bottom):

I believe I've seen this mentioned somewhere else, but that's the only review I could find right now.

Hmmmm... That's weird. I'll try and find out if anybody else has heard about this on some other Asian DVD forums.

Came across another mention of this on www.koreanfilm.org's subtitles page:

from http://www.koreanfilm.org/subtitles.html:
TELL ME SOMETHING [EDKO VIDEO] (1999) Directed by Chang Yoon-hyun. A serial killer is leaving body parts in plastic bags around Seoul. Detective Cho discovers that the victims are all connected with one woman. Starring Han Suk-kyu and Shim Eun-ha. // Codes: Marked as Region 3, but it is actually an all-region disc. Subtitles: English, Chinese (removable). Aspect ratio: letterbox. Audio: Korean or Cantonese, Dolby 5.1. Running time: 117 min. Includes trailer, director/cast info, photo gallery, music video, and four postcards. From Edko Video in Hong Kong. This is the uncut version. SOURCES: YesAsia, Poker, DVDAsian.com.

Can anybody confirm that the Korean Tell Me Something DVD is cut?

dleedlee 04-12-04 03:10 PM

The Edko version, which is the one I have, came out before the Spectrum release. But I don't remember hearing about a cut either. Someone at the koreanfilm.org forum should know since that's where it's mentioned. I tried searching but couldn't find any old discussions about it, only a comparison with the R1/Kino release.

Forum:

And it looks like the Edko version has just been rereleased (see layoyo.com) if you want it.

ehonauer 04-13-04 08:52 AM

I have the Edko release, but not the Spectrum. I'm just curious about whether there are in fact different cuts of the film.
