Question: Hong Kong Legends - Once Upon a Time In China!
I recently picked up the US release of 'Once Upon a time in China', I dig the movie but the transfer is god awful. So, how is the Hong Kong Legends version? I know it says re-mastered for DVD, but that means nothing for most companies.
Reviews? Etc? Thanks. |
It's better. Not that that means anything. It's still a bad print of a great movie.
If you can play PAL discs, then you should upgrade to the HKL. If you can't, then it's not worth getting a new player for it. |
It's miles better than the awful us dvd (interlaced 4:3 letterbox upconverted to 16:9) and well worth the pickup. It's available fairly cheap as a 3 part trilogy housed in a digipack.

I guess I'll rebuy it then. How about Iron Monkey? Transfer and sound better on that one also?
Sorry - I've never bought any of the HKL discs. |
Iron Monkey is uncut, has accurate subtitles, and has the correct music track. The transfer is a little less than the R1 Miramax, but the film is better represented on the Hong Kong Legends disc.

HKL has a new version of iron monkey coming out in february, so you may want to wait a bit. But the US disc actually has the best transfer and sound, although it is slightly modified from the original cut.
