French film recommendations

I'm looking for something light along the lines of The Closet or Amelie, either a comedy or any light-hearted movie. Any recommendations?

The Dinner Game is an excellent comedy!

Also, I really liked Jean de Florette and the sequel Manon of the Spring.

One of the funniest films I've ever seen is LE CHEVRE (The Goat) - recently released on DVD. It should come with a supply of Pampers.

I wanted to say that but they are not comedies or light-hearted. But they are great films.

try a Tonie Marshall movie Venus Beauté or wait for this one France Boutique even this one could suit you Embrassez qui vous voudre or if you really like Audrey Tautou Le battement d'ailes du papillon of course no one is a masterpiece like Amelie is, but as for lighthearted comedies you'll find a lot of interesting movies in France.

ok.....I am not going to recommend what you asked for in terms of country of origin (how about the fact that this film won some major awards in Cannes and later on an Oscar.....anyway)....but I highly, HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you see Cinema Paradiso ASAP if you have not done so yet:

Try 8 Femmes (8 women). It is a whodunit-cluedo-style with a bit of musical-hindi-movie-style.

Pretty original.

Try "cite des enfants perdus", translated as "City of lost children". Same directors as Amelie, but much, much darker. My wife cannot watch this film, as it gives her nightmares. I think it she is a jewel (both the film and my wife).

Yeah City of Lost Children was the movie that introduced me to Jean-Pierre Jeunet. I liked it so much that I went out and bought Amelie without having seen it before. I rarely do that when I don't know much about a movie and can rent it.

But I really didn't find it all that dark, at least story-wise. It had a very dark, imaginative visual style to it, but overall the movie felt a lot like a fairy tale. The story is about innocence, so I don't know if I'd call it dark or scary.

I started watching Irreversible last night and that is what I would call a dark movie. I've never seen such disturbing violence before. Ichi the Killer has plenty of violence but it's all so over-the-top that you really can't take it seriously. But just that early scene where that guy gets his head bashed in with a fire extinguisher was very disturbing. It's going to be interesting to see just how bad the movie gets (I had to go to sleep so I didn't finish it all).

GIRL ON THE BRIDGE. Though you'll have to import it.

Leconte's MAN ON THE TRAIN is also great but not exactly light-hearted - more wistful, I suppose. Then again, if your standard for dark is IRREVERSIBLE then, yes, it's pretty light by comparison.

Exactly

And just to confuse things even more, it's set in Norway

Yes, it is indeed a French Canadian film except that the originator of this thread asked for French films and not films in French.

Ahem... well... that said, Maelstrom is a funny, quirky little film in French although snotty French people might actually argue it's not really proper French.

If you really want a couple of light-hearted, feel-good French flicks, try Irreversible or I Stand Alone.
