Anyone know anything regarding Breaking The Waves DTS Region 0?

Hi all,
I came across this DTS Region 0 version of Breaking The Waves, does anyone know anything more on it?:

http://www.koreandvds.com/dvddetail.html?id=9645

Besides DTS and DD5.1 it lists the running time at 159 minutes which according to imdb it'd be the uncut european version. What's confusing though is that i also found this DVD at eBay and it lists the running time at the usual 155 minutes.

Would there likely to be any censorship on the more explicit scenes?

And, has anyone ordered from www.koreandvds.com before? What's their delivery time like? I've tried to look for more Region 0 sellers who sell this DVD but i've not had much luck.

Thanks,
Mark

Mark,

Awhile ago i was really close to ordering this disc as it is NTSC, DTS and unlike the R1 version indicated as being anamorphic. The pre-order price was also only 6$ HOWEVER....

....recently I was told that EVITA is not anamorphic, though the site indicates that it is so...I never really did inquire about Breaking the Waves.

TonyBlock i believe (or one of the Chicago talkers...cant believe which one) has done some business with them and all the feedback has been absolutely great! Shipping to the US is close to 7-10 days....if I can recall correctly! Not sure about Europe.

It was mentioned before that their CS is very good so you might want to shoot them an email first and confirm if the disc is indeed 16/9.

Hope this helps!!

Thanks for the help pro-bassoonist. I've sent off an email asking about the running time.

I wonder why it's on "Special Sale" at $10? They also have another older version which is out of stock at $23. Hopefully the new version released 15th of March is just a re-release and not defective in any way.

I received a "could not be delivered" response from my email to [email protected], hopefully it's just a full mailbox. (I'll try again later.)

pro-bassoonist 04-26-03 03:20 PM

no I dont think it is defective....

This is actually their Spring Sale (or something of that sort)..they also have:

The million dollar hotel- anamorphic
Farewell my concubine- anamorphic
The Music Teacher (dts, G.Corbiau) .......and so on....

all for 6-9$......

so many good deals there...but you always have to double check the specs I guess!!

****
If you liked Amelie there is a slate of titles that are not yet available in the US (and I dont think yet in England):

He Loves me He Loves me not (anamophic)
God is great I am not (anamorphic)

****

also Sophie Marceau's Belphegor....which I liked but many did not..with the original French track and English subs...UNLIKE the canadian R1 version which offers either French or English dubs only if I could recall correctly.

****

....anyway...let me know what they told you about the disc...if they are not sure what you're asking ask them to send you a scan of the back cover of the disc. THEY COULD DO THAT!!

Regards,
S.

My email seems to have gone through, if i don't receive a reply in a few days i'll probably just purchase it.

Do you know of a site which reviews region 0 discs? I've seen a few which focus on Hong Kong action movies.

Gotta love this DVD cover art for Crash:

Nice cover...too bad stuff like it will never show in the US. We do however have a great disc of CRASH with both the R and Unrated versions on the same disc.....which I own and highly recommend if you do not have it.

Okay, just received an email back.

"Dear Sir. Actually it's running time is 158 Min. This is from the back cover listing the specification."

Imdb lists the extended (criterion laserdisc) running time at 159 minutes, is it NTSC or PAL that would be used on this disc? If it's PAL the 4% speedup might account for the missing minute.

It looks like the best release available - from what i've read the other foreign releases have forced subtitles. I think i'll order it and i'll post up a few screengrabs and info to let you know what it's like.

I found this link while browsing on Google:
http://www.scotlandthemovie.com/movies/fwaves.html

It was cool to see that it was filmed fairly near where i am.

The IMDb is wrong on both counts. The European version runs 153 minutes, just a bit longer than the Artisan DVD release (which has been slightly trimmed for ratings purposes); the Criterion LD uses the same version, and since it was a director approved edition, it's probably safe to say that this is von Trier's final cut. The 158-minute (or 159 depending on the source) version played theatrically in the U.S. (I'm not sure if it played anywhere else) and included footage that von Trier had not intended to be shown. (Supposedly he suffered a mini-nervous breakdown when he found out it had been added back in.) I have yet to find anybody who remembers what this extra footage consisted of.

All home video releases of the film to date (in the U.S. and elsewhere) are missing this extra footage, although the Criterion LD has a couple of deleted and extended scenes that are apparently different from the extra footage in the U.S. theatrical version. If the Korean version is indeed the 158-minute version it's the first time I'm aware of that this version has been released on home video. If anybody gets this disc, please confirm if it is indeed 158 minutes and it's not just a typo on the case, since if it is the extended cut I'd like to get my hands on it, director's preference aside.

Thanks for the info Dan Average. I've seen the US 153 minute cut so i'll be able to tell you which scenes have been added in. DTS/5.1 sounds interesting, i'm assuming it'll be like the Dancer In The Dark soundtrack where everything but the musical sequences come from the centre channel.

I'll keep you both updated!

Mark:

I am looking forward to your review and screen-grabs. Please LMK when you get the disc!!!

I've repeatedly tried to connect to koreandvds.com without success. Am I the only one having this problem? Are they down a lot?

Mark Carpenter 05-02-03 05:01 AM

Hi Thor,
The KoreanDVDs website is fairly slow for me but i'm always able to connect. You might want to contact your ISP about it, my ISP's forum often has people posting about problems connecting to specific sites and it's fixed soon after.

Here's something else i came across, some pictures on the make-up effects used in the film: (Some of the following links are quite gruesome.)

And some more from Dancer In The Dark:
