Raise the Red Lantern - any legit releases?
 

I've been looking for a dvd version of Yimou Zhang's "Raise the Red Lantern" but so far have come across copies that look like bad quality bootlegs. Is there any legit DVD version of this film in any region?

ERA in Hong Kong released Raise The Red Lantern on DVD. It a Mandarin only disk with burnt subs in Chinese and English. It's legit, all region, and low quality.

Still hoping for a better version of this and Ju Dou...

Looks like there's also a version on Carnival label that had removable subs. Dvdshelf used to list it, but they only show the ERA version. See asiandvdguide.

that's funny, just received this in the mail today. quality is pretty bad, but what are you gonna do? i love the film and had to have it. actually, I've been relenting to buy substandard releases of a few films lately... ju dou presented as full frame, new york stories presented as full frame, and Akira Kurasawa's Dreams presented as 1.85:1 instead of it's original 2.35:1 -- but there was no alternative.

Your Ju Dou must be the R1 version.
There is a China version by GZBeauty that should be letterboxed (as are all of Zhang Yimou DVDs released by GZBeauty).

I have the gzbeauty release. it's not letterboxed.

Even the GZBeauty version is fullscreen?!
That sucks... I was going to buy that version...
Guess I'll have to wait till a proper version comes out...
