Amelie - UK edition question

Talk in the main forum about the typos in the subtitles on the US edition of Amelie got me to wondering about the UK edition. Does that disc use the same subtitles as the region 1 copy, or does it include the original theatrical subs?

I think the famous "Page St." example would be a good test.

I have that and it's perfect. It seems like American English so it's more suited for North American eyes but I didn't have a problem with it.

There's a review here and here

What about the "Page St." reference (supposed to say "page 51") or the woman at the carnival who says that Nino comes in at a certain time when she's supposed to say that he gets out then?

I'm trying to determine if the UK edition has different subs than the US edition. The subs on the DVD here are not the same ones that were attached to theatrical prints, for some reason.

I don't recall a problem.

Where's this thread or do you have the exact running times and I'll double check for you.

I could give you running times for the NTSC edition, but they won't match up with your PAL copy.

Basically, you can go to the scene where Amelie visits Nino at the funhouse. On the American DVD it's in the middle of Chapter 9. When Amelie gets there she asks the woman at the ticket booth about Nino.

The subtitles here say "He doesn't get in until 7:00", which clearly makes no sense because Amelie goes into the funhouse and there he is. The woman is supposed to say "He doesn't get out until 7:00".

If you could check out that scene and post here what the subtitles on your copy say, that would be much appreciated.

I'm trying to help you here and a rough timing would have sufficed. I've not watched the disc since release (over a year ago in the UK) and I'm not sure where that scene is (or I'd not have asked for a running time). It's not listed in the scene access as I quickly checked.

LMK and I'll check later today

On the US disc, it's at 1:17:45, but the US disc has a mastering flaw where the time code is off by about 2-minutes.

Assuming a 4% speedup, it should be in the vicinity of somewhere between the 1:10:00 and the 1:15:00 mark.

It's the scene immediately after Amelie visits the porno shop.

Alors:

67 mins exactly PAL.

That's rather 'American' (like most French to English subtitled films). I tend to compare subs with what's actually being said (or what I hear) and the subs are very good on Amelie -but as I said it's translated for the North American eye.

No fault then you'll be pleased to hear/see

HTH.

Lucas, thank you very much. That is exactly what I wanted to know.

It looks like the UK DVD has the theatrical subtitles, then (which were pretty good). For some reason the US DVD has inferior subtitles.

Stupid Miramax...

122 or 129 minutes?

I have another question regarding the UK R2 release of the film... I noticed on DVD Talk's Cinema Paradiso review, found at:

http://www.dvdtalk.com/dvdsavant/s752parad.html

that 7 minutes of the film were cut from the American release. I tried investigating this on the web but couldn't confirm it.

I noticed on this thread that 7 minutes skip on the timer at a certain scene for the American release. So the American version actually is 122 minutes, even though the timer at the end of the film says 129. There is no timer skip on the UK R2 DVD. Can anyone confirm that the feature film is 129 minutes on the UK version rather than 122, as on the American release? Any idea what the extra minutes are of, if they exist?

UK DVDs are in PAL format and will run 4% too fast, so you won't ever get an exact running time match-up. As far as I know, both discs are complete and uncut, though it is true that the US disc has a glitch where its time index jumps ahead a few minutes at the layer change.

The movie's proper running time should be 122 minutes. I'm not sure why IMDb lists a 129 minute running time for France. I was under the impression that Miramax didn't cut anything from this one, though I could be wrong.
