I've finally decided to take the plunge and get the Malata 520. Anyone know where the cheapest place to get one is? Thanks!

www.pclandonline.com has the DAV-3600 for $250 shipped, the 3600 is the 520 plus speakers.

Should I buy a Malata DVP-520 for new home?

Suggested that I ask here if buying a Malata DVP-520 for my new HDTV would be a good idea. I'm extremely new to an "all region" DVD player, and to an HDTV for that matter. The reason why I want to upgrade to a new DVD player is because I will be needing a progressive scan player, and one that can play multi-region, since I want to finally order some music DVDs from Germany and the UK that I've been wanting for a long long time, but unable to play on my current Toshiba player.

I was told to come here and ask first, because I guess some of you have had problems with this player? I was concerned, since I almost bought it from the pop up we get from time to time when we come into this forum. The player looks nice, and would be a great edition, but if there is something out there, in the same price range that is better, then I would of course..go with that one. But what do I know? Well, I don't know squat, .. .hence why I'm asking. :D

I bought the MALATA 520 as a 2nd player a couple of months ago, and I have to admit, it's one of the best purchases I've ever made. Not only does it play non-region 1 discs, its X/Y scaling feature is perfect for those over-scanned and non-anamorphic DVDs. You can actually spread the non-anamorphic picture from all corners to fit your widescreen. As long as you arrange the picture to the same aspect ratio, there should be no distortion or pixalation problem (1:85.1 should fill the entire screen, 2:35.1 should have black bars on top and bottom). Do this correctly, and you'd swear you were watching an anamorphic movie. Don't hesitate to buy this player. It's the best all-region player on the market. There are cheaper models, but they don't have the X/Y scaling feature.

Agree... I also have the Malta N996 and they both are great...

I have a widescreen Toshiba 42H82 42" 16:9 HDTV-Ready and a Samsung 30" Widescreen and the Malata's work fantastic on both.

How do I turn the PBC function on in my Malata 520?
 

Hey guys,

When I put a VCD I made on my computer into my Malata 520, it states "PCB off" and therefore can't play it.

But when I put it into a region 1 player that I got at like a Sears-like store, it worked fine. It immediately recognized PCB (whatever this means) and played my home made VCD. Menu worked and everything.

Can anyone help me figure out how to turn the PCB back on in my Malata 520? Thanks.

Have you tried reauthoring the xVCD with PBC off?

All it means is Playback Control, which allows you to do some sort of interactive stuff with the VCD like pause, menus etc...

So, if it doesn't play on your 520, somethings probably wrong with the VCD.

Anyone can author a xVCD, it's just knowing the limitation of your players is tricky. Check vcdhelp.com.

Try the MENU button.

I tried the menu button and nothing happened. It wouldn't respond to ANY of the buttons on my remote...

Just for my knowledge, what's the difference between a VCD and a xVCD?

Second, I don't have like VCD or DVD authoring software that exists on it's own. I have Pinnacle Studio 8 software, which is an editing and authoring software built into one. And when I make the VCD through the software, it never gives me an option to turn on/off the PBC...

XVCD stands for eXtendedVCD. XVCD has same features as VCD but it is possible to use higher bitrates and higher resolution to get higher video quality. XVCD is basicly everything that uses MPEG1 video, is not within the VCD standard and burnt in "VCD"-Mode.

True VCD is only 1,150 bits per second at 352 x 240 resolution. But the Malata can handle slightly less than 2,500 bits per seconds. So to maximize my own projects, I burn an X(S)VCD at 2,500 bps at 480 x 480 on a blank CD-R, and voila, the best picture I can hope to get off a CD.

Sounds like your making you VCDs 1.1 compatible, which does not support PCB (menus, etc.) You need to make a 2.0 compliant VCD. There should be a simple check box somewhere in your Pinnacle studios. I have never used this software.

The "menu" button should toggle between PCB on & off. I have had no problem playing 2.0 VCD's on my 520 that I have authored both ways. I have never tried creating a 1.1 compatible.

Does the Malata 520 play DVD-R/W and/or DVD+R/W discs?
 

I'm thinking of getting a dvd burner, but I need to know whether the malata dvp-520 that I have can play all (or any) of these formats:

DVD-R
DVD-RW
DVD+R
DVD+RW

Malata 520 trouble
 

Im new to the region-free thing. Please bare with me, as I need help. Lol.

A good freind and afficainado had been HIGHLY recommending the Malata 520 to me. There is a store here in NYC that sells them. Just the player, no warranty, but thats where he got his.

Of course, when I got mine a few days ago, the first Region 2 DVD I purchased, "Paris, Texas" has very annoying pixelation problems. The whole opening scene in the desert, anything white or bright or metallic is jumpy as heck as is the letter box border.

And as I found on "Monsson Wedding" (also Region 2, I got it cheap!) the subtitles were bad and "jumpy" as well. I ahve no warranty, but I can return it, I hope, for another player...anyone have any ideas at all...?

I would check the DVDs on a different player, because my Malata works just fine with the R2 & R3 DVDs that I have played on it.

I've heard of pixelation problems on early 520s that were produced.
