re: Picture Quality of HKL's dvd such as for Project A

I took the plunge this week-end and bought a region free dvd player called the Nintaus N9888P. Played HKL's Project A on the player since I know that movie is suppose to have a pretty good transfer/picture. The scenes in daylight and good lighting looks great. However, whenever it is night-time or dimly lit scenes, I noticed that things seems to get lost in the background of black with details being hard to distingusih.

For example, when Jackie Chan is fighting in the clock tower just before his famous stunt/fall, his hair just blend into the dark background. Similarly the machinery in the room seems to melt into the darkness. Considering that Project A is suppose to have an above average transfer, are other HKL's dvds like this. I am just wondering if other people have the same experience as I do or am I being too picky. I know these aren't recent Hollywood blockbusters but I am just wondering if the picture is typical, if it is the dvd player/equipment or if I need to turn my contrast up.

I do have a Proscan 60" rear projection which is 5 years old but it still gives a great picture if the source is there.
