What dvds are worth getting from Australia ??

My brother is going there & I wanted him to pick up all the films that are better than our region 1 counterparts or not even available here in the states...thanks !!!

The Adventure of Ford Fairlane!!!

Also Robcop SE great DVD and a 5.1 mix + deleted scenes to boot. Oh and it is also the Directors cut of the movie also like the Criterion one.

Trainspotting -16/9

...and mostly every other Buena Vista dvd!!

Bill Geiger 02-10-03 12:11 AM

Along with the Ford Failane, add People Under The Stairs & Happy Gilmore 16:9 for starters.

How are the X-Files sets R4? I found them fairly cheap at an etailer and am curious if there are any known flaws with them?

Anything from Warner as they use Amaray style cases in Australia.

Amores Perros has a very nice transfer.

Some other bits of interest:

The Interview
Praise
Lantana (slight fault on disc -but most people don't notice).
Once Were Warriors (best available version)

Plenty reviews @ www.dvd-basen.dk

I'd not touch the MGM/Fox RoboCop release as it's the same nasty faulty disc that RoboCop has in the UK. It has not very seamless seamless branching.

Buying online is usually cheaper than in shops -that applies to Australia too.

digitalfreaknyc 02-10-03 09:45 AM

Well...1 thing to say.

Not ALL Warner discs are amaray. I have Frantic and it's a snapper. People keep insisting but it's simply not true.

And just remember...you got the nasty a$$ PAL speed-up on all of your titles. So it's debateable how much better the titles are.

Lucas 02-10-03 11:33 AM

Warner released their discs in snappers (cardboard) in all territories but Warner Australia changed after a few years of complaints.

People who lived in Australia and didn't like the snappers were supplied with the new keep case artwork very cheaply (or free) when the cases were reprinted.

Not true. Many releases in Australia are NTSC as Region 4 includes South America too.

Also, we know NTSC is always the worst possible format to watch a film. Even Dubya says so :D

So wait...how are you supposed to know which ones are NTSC???

Warner and Columbia-Tristar (2 that release in NTSC sometimes) usually put it in quite big writing on the case -plus of course Web reviews mention it.

digitalfreaknyc 02-10-03 02:24 PM

I've never heard of this. Is it a large portion of movies??? lol

What websites mention this...i'm at a loss.

Trigger 02-10-03 04:38 PM

what about Predator and Speed?

hardtack 02-10-03 05:34 PM

Actually, it is not a large number of titles that are released in NTSC format in Australia... and those that are, for the most part are not major releases, but lesser known films that are not expected to sell in vast numbers anyway (so why waste time and effort formatting them correctly for the region  ) - films such as Joe Volcano, Night Shift, Power of One, Funny Farm , Forget Paris, American Flyers, Fearless, and so on. And yes, they mostly seem to be from Warner$.

If you want to find out precisely which titles are available in Australia in NTSC format, then I recommend you go to DVD Orchard and enter NTSC in the search field... it will produce a list of about seven pages.

Some r4 recommendations:
Mummy Returns - DTS (sounds fantastic!)
13 Days (DTS)
15 Minutes (DTS)
Eyes Wide Shut (unedited version)

Also from what I hear the 2 disc Reservior Dogs r4 set has all the extras + DTS without the black level issues that plagued the r1 edition.

jomalley2001 02-12-03 12:04 AM

Rabbit Proof Fence is terrific film and a nice 2 disc set. Mad Max has a full bit rate DTS track.

digitalfreaknyc 02-12-03 09:09 AM

Dean,

15 Minutes is DTS over here as well.

Electric2k 02-12-03 09:27 AM

The original Austin Powers is also a great R4 disc. It's an alternate cut, that not only has deleted scenes edited back in--but quite a few alternate shots as well. It's fascinating how different the cut is.

Disc-Flipper 02-12-03 02:48 PM

Child's Play 3

Dean Walsh 02-12-03 03:00 PM

15 Minutes is DTS over here as well.
The r1 version is an Infinifilm release from New Line, but only has DD 5.1 & 2.0 options... no dts.

digitalfreaknyc 02-12-03 03:12 PM

Hmm...i looked on DVDpricesearch and it said DTS.

My bad. Sorry.

It is true actually. When Warner started releasing r4 dvds they were all initially in snapper cases. Since then though everything has been changed over to Amarays, and all the initial titles were replaced with Amaray covers. Warner even had a mail in during the changeover phase which allowed snapper owners to have replacement Amaray inserts sent to them.

That's interesting because I got Frantic not 4 months ago from Australia (Ezydvd) sealed and it's a snapper.

Dean Walsh 02-12-03 09:30 PM

They must've been hanging onto old stock.

HistoryProf 02-13-03 11:58 AM

I would think that'd be the place to get Broken English in the original cut - it's not on dvd at all in R1 and I wish it were....if you liked Once were Warriors, check it out....
