What convinced you to buy a multi-region player?
 

Most likely it is a particular DVD that prompted you to buy a multi-region player. What was it? Or if you have another reason, that's not title specific, please post that.

And thanks to the following posts from Finland, reminding me that this website is visited world-wide, please tell your region.

I used to watch movies through my computer and had plenty of movies from R1, R2 and R4 before I bought my dvd player. When I finally bought a player the multi-region version was the only way to go.

My reasons were when i bought my first Region-Free player (now i have two more) late '99:
- R1's are released earlier than R2's. At the time The Matrix was released on R1 ;)
- There are tons of films released on different Regions. Not all end-up released on Region 2.
- R4's are usually cheaper (up to 50% or more at times!) than R2's and most are flagged R2/R4 anyway.
- Better VCD and SVCD playback

My opinion about whole Region Coding? I think i dont have to even say it...

Before I bought my first player I read up on DVD in forums like this one. I found out about region coding, as well as players that could be region-free as well as convert PAL to NTSC. I went and bought the Apex 600a, which was then one of the few that had those options, although the PAL conversion wasn't the best.

A few months later I got the R3 HK DVD of Taxi and haven't looked back.

Moving to International.

I just saw no point in buying anything else but a region-free player (and a region-free dvd-rom for my PC) - I mean, why accept an artificial limitation? My first DVDs were some Hongkong R0 releases and a few borrowed R1s from a friend, btw. I am based in R2-land ...

I wanted to be able to play the Hong Kong Legends discs from the UK.

I was only casually thinking about it during the first half of this year. Then Fox made the decision for me when they put the R1 "All That Jazz" on a seemingly eternal hold. I then bought a JVC multi-region player that has PAL to NTSC conversion capability in August & the first non-region 1 DVD that I purchased was the R2 "All That Jazz". It was the best decision I could have made, it opened up so many other DVD possibilities for me.

One - There was a childhood movie that [at the time] was only r2.

Two - It also plays mp3s, SVCDs & almost anything I can fit in there. [Still working on the kitchen sink...:)]

I was at a Stereophonics show in Wales which I knew would be coming out on R2 DVD and I wanted to own and resee the show at my leisure, so... this justified my action in purchasing a multi-region player.

If you don't mind me asking, what was that movie?

Farscape/Prisoner
 

For me, it was the ability to get Farscape. Not only were they out in R2 MUCH SOONER than here in R1, but they were packaged much nicer and were generally less-expensive. I've already got all of the first three seasons on DVD... They've JUST released S1 in R1 as a single set (which annoyed those who bought the higher-priced 11 individual DVDs), and S2 is only 4 DVDs into the season.

The icing on the cake was when Patrick McGoohan's "The Prisoner" came out. The entire series was published on a 5-DVD box set in R2, but A&E released it on TEN DVDs over here in R1, driving up the price considarably. To get all ten DVDs right now, it's over $120 via DDD.... To get the 5-DVD set from the UK, it's GBP 54, or about $85. When I got it last summer, I got it from DVDPlus (back when they used to ship to the US) for GBP 43 shipped, or $68.

One reason: Buffy (prior to it becoming available in R1, although I'm still happy to be two seasons ahead of north america)

Of course, nowadays multi-region means much more than buffy alone...

Futurama

Hong Kong Legends (Jet Li and John Woo stuff mostly)
Laetitia Casta (got the R2 "Gitano" so I could watch her in all her anamorphic glory on a 65" screen) :drool:

A few factors.

1. Futurama was released in R2
2. Pandora's Box was released in R2
3. Several animes in multiple regions
4. Britcoms britcoms britcoms....
5. Ring, Ring 2, Ring 0 was released in R2
6. The Krays in R2 with no hope of an R1 probably.

Is there a paticular region free dvd palyer that anyone can recommend? Also, where is a good web site to buy one?

Not at all. It's called the Water Babies. Of course, right after I bought both the DVD & the DVD player, MGM announces a r1 release... D'oh! Oh well. I like having the option to select from whichever region I want. And, again, I must bring up the fact that it plays SVCDs. :D

Stargate SG-1. R2 is up to season 5, while in the U.S. they released season 1, then took 18 months to get season 2 out.

I need to watch Korean movies.

I purchased JVC XV-SA70 region free player with PAL to NTSC conversion capability from JVB Digital. A very pleasant firm to do business with. I received a small discount off their listed price because I picked it up in person. After reading thru the instructions quickly, the player was not difficult to setup to my liking. The remote is pretty easy to use. This player produces a VERY nice picture with R1 DVDs in the progressive scan mode. The only small nitpick that I have is the inability of the player to display "time remaining" like my old Sony changer could. My own personal bias is to see time displayed that way instead of counting upward from 00:00:00. This particular player is no longer available.

since I wanted to collect all the movies I love a multi-region DVd player was the only logical solution

I was convinced when I found out that other regions had:

A) movies unavailable in R1
B) 16x9 over R1 discs either P&S or letterboxed
C) exclusive content over R1 releases like DTS ect.....

Not to mention I got my Daewoo 5800 for a measly $90.
You can't beat that for a second player.
