Kurosawa's "Dreams" R2- 12/20

Just saw this posted on Warner Bros Japan site.

Akira Kurosawa's Dreams will be released in a 1 Disc set on Dec 20.
Price is 2,980 yen and will be anamorphic widescreen with English (and other) subtitles. Dolby digital 2.0 and no mention of extras. Not a bad price for a domestic Japanese release of a Japanese movie.

Here's a link to the page. Only in Japanese.

Cool, I'll be picking this one up unless a region 1 release gets announced before then.

Actually screw the region 1, the region 2 has a very nice cover and doesn't look like it's in a crappy snapper.

This is great news ... like a "dream" come true. (Okay, that was stupid ...)

Seriously though, this is great news. I think I will put an order in for this immediately.

I know I'm probably jumping the gun here, but just wondering if anyone bought this R2 edition?

The R1 looks like it'll be real cheap too, but if I can get smooth packaging and good quality on the R2 it might be worth the little extra investment.

Just picked up my copy.
The DVD comes in a nice looking Japanese paper case.
Nice looking but not exactly the sturdiest of wraparound cases I've seen.
For the disc itself, the biggest surprise for me is that the menus are in English. The back of the case shows the menu in Japanese but when I popped it in the DVD player, the menus are in English.
Extras include cast and crew notes and listing awards Kurosawa won.
Overall quality looks nice. I haven't had time to watch it all but the picture looks colorful and the sound is only 2.0 but adequate for this feature.
Overall nice disc for one I've been waiting for. And especially for a domestic release of a Japanese movie, a nice price.

For those of you that have this already, is it really a region 2 disc or region 0. I've found this as a region 0 on several sites but am worried that it might be a bootleg since amazon.co.jp and cdjapan have it listed as a region 2.

I am pretty sure it is Region 2, but unfortunately I have no way of being able to tell on my machine (Pioneer 535).

Can tell you that it is a very nice transfer though... my only problem is with the audio level which is very very low (anyone else find that?).

regards, Tim...

It's says R2 on the back of the case... However as a check, I made sure that my player was switched to R1 - and it loaded no problem. I even double checked the player mode with an MK2 disc (also R2) and it would not load.

So what I surmise is that at least my Dreams disc is actually all region (or at least R1) and the back cover is a misprint.

...erm... do the Japanese actually even make R0 DVDs...?... can't see why they would do that...

...having planted the seed of doubt about the authenticity re: the "Japanese" origin of this DVD, leaves room on tiptoe, an evil smirk distorting his face...

. . . . . .

I do have the odd Japanese feature that is R0, and yes they are authentic. They are of course the exception rather than the norm. Some are authoring errors where the region code wasn't set and others are lower key titles like v-cinema features where they couldn't give a rat's ass (or a ferret's for that matter) about region coding.

The interesting thing about this is that the title section is in english. Only the intertitles come up in Japanese. So I'm wondering if this Japanese release is exactly the same as the about to be released US version... Which could possibly explain why (at least my disc) is not R2, even though the label on the disc itself says R2. It could be that as Furious stated, an authoring error. But all I know is I got this from amazon.co.jp and it is the legit Japanese Warner Bros release.
