Zhang Yimou's HERO - December 2002 Release date! - Pictures and 1st Review.
Full information at Monkey peaches
I was walking around Hong Kong today and I saw banners for this movie with a Dec 2002 release date ... I'm really excited as Zhang Yimou never disappoints! Easily my most anticipated movie of the year! http://cirrus888.netmag.easyspace.com/Movies3/hero3.jpg Beautiful in only a way Zhang Yimou knows how to do! Forget CTHD ... this is the real thing! :D http://cirrus888.netmag.easyspace.com/Movies3/hero5.jpg http://cirrus888.netmag.easyspace.com/Movies3/hero2.jpg http://cirrus888.netmag.easyspace.com/Movies3/hero1.jpg |

You guys realize that Miramax will run this movie through the meat grinder and then fool millions of North Americans into thinking it's the real thing, right? They won't fool US, of course, but that's not the point.

Is that the HK release date?

Miramax:
http://members.aol.com/piku94/yousuckbunny.jpg Of course i'm going to find the DVD that has the longer running time...no pasty whiteboys are gonna tell me what parts of an Asian movie should be cut. |
the Miramax conundrum
Originally posted by Numskull You guys realize that Miramax will run this movie through the meat grinder and then fool millions of North Americans into thinking it's the real thing, right? They won't fool US, of course, but that's not the point. http://www.petitiononline.com/flfoscar/petition.html This could be like what happened with Once Upon a Time in America, where the studio trimmed half the film away, making it incoherrent. Then it was shown uncut where it it raked in praise and money, and is the preferred version. I don't trust Miramax to do the right thing however, and if the legit Asian DVD comes out first it will probably be a better release than what will be released here. My worst fear is not so much the editing but that Miramax will dub the film into English ruining the feel of the film. |
Originally posted by Harlock415 The catch is that Miramax did produce this movie I know they helped produce Legend of Zu...and it bit them in the ass because the movie sucked big time (and will suck even more when they release their butchered version with 24 minutes cut out). Alas, that wasn't enough to get them to abandon HK cinema entirely. |
Miramax definitely co-produced it. The opening titles say as much & they share the first title card with the Chinese production company.
Jeremy, who has seen it... |

Miramax had production credits on the HK legend of Zu DVD did it not?
|
The Weinstein brothers were listed as producers (or executive producers...whatever) but I don't remember if there was a Miramax logo anywhere. That movie was so astoundingly crappy, I've tried to block all memory of it from my mind.

You talking about OUATIA, Zu, or Hero?

This weekend's monkeypeaches report has a lot of news and info based on the short version of the documentary CAUSE on the making of HERO.
http://www.monkeypeaches.com/ Previously reported: Made by Gan Lu, a young woman filmmaker only in her early twenties, it is the only documentary covering the entire production of HERO. A 90-minutes short version will finished first and a 15-episodes series will follow. Each episode is 25-minutes long and has one unique subject, Wind, Horse, Wild, Qin, Water, Stratagem, Bright, Snow, Sword, Moon, Color, Martial, Music, Harmony and Shadow (?). |
I thought Sony produced this?
hmmm, a December release, I wonder how far it will go in the Oscars. wouldn't it be neat if it wins best picture. and for those of you who've seen it, without divulging any spoilers, was it good? :) |
Let me know when this gets released on DVD in HK... [rolls over and goes back to sleep]

Yeah, quite good actually. It's a worthy competitor to CTHD (not sure how's that's been received around these parts though). I would say it's the best looking movie from anywhere since In the Mood for Love too. I signed an agreement saying I wouldn't go into detail online when I saw it so I'll stop, but it is absolutely worth being excited over.

Hehe - just found a thread I started about this movie over a year ago - http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthr...hreadid=132532
I didn't realize that I've been waiting for this movie for like a year and a half. I can't find the thread, but around that time I said this would be the next CTHD. I think it was in Movie Talk discussing which films would make the most money. Nobody believed me that this film would be worth a crap. Then again - if you check that thread I was so wrong about Jet Li's The One, so they have reason to be skeptical of things I say sometimes. :) |
Taken from the updated monkeypeaches production diary on Hero:
"When shooting one fight scene, Zhang Ziyi's blade accidentally hit the back of Maggie Cheung's left hand. She carried Cheung's hand and did not know what to do. When other people rushed to Maggie Cheung, she quietly walked away with tears." "Last day of the shooting. Maggie Cheung and Leung Chiu-Wai had finished their scenes two days before, but they did not leave. Maggie Cheung came wearing a pair of sunglass because she knew she would cry that day. Director of CAUSE Gan Lu and her colleagues spent two nights to edit out a 10-minute documentary called 10 DAYS and showed it to everyone. People were cheering for whoever shown up on the screen, Zhang Yimou were taking pictures for others, they were saying goodbye to each other with tear in their eyes..." |
Anyone know how/where to get the legitimate Asian version of this movie aside from hazarding ebay?
|
I bought mine from e-bay from a thread by Raxel here. It arrived today and I plan on watching it this week. I paid $19.99 including shipping.
