Review Wanted: Faster Pussycat Kill! Kill!
There is supposedly a French DVD release of this movie.

Just wondering about the quality (grainy?)

and whats the aspect ratio (I'm not even sure what the OAR is)

No one has this ?

you might want to ask in the International DVD forum. That's where discussion of non-Region 1 discs goes on. People reading that forum know a lot more about non-Region 1 titles than people reading this one.

Moving to Int'l DVD Forum.

;) Transgoogled:

The black and white of origin keep all its beauty and its contrasts. The luminosity is perfect. Unfortunately compression is not with the height and the grain of the image is rather unstable. The electronic subtitles are rather well made and are perfectly readable on white zone. Even if that is not announced in the menu of the versions, know that these subtitles are optional (one can remove them during the reading),

Is this region-free or R2?

(FWIW, it's my favorite of all Russ Meyer's movies!)

Richard Malloy 06-25-02 12:01 PM

(Whoops... sorry for wasting time! R2 according to review link above.)

Domestic Russ Meyer releases are here!
This sort of takes the discussion back to R1 but Russ Meyer has finally started releasing his films on US DVD.

The tragedy is that they are single title releases (the laserdiscs were double or even tripple features for the same price). The discs are about half the price of his VHS tapes.

Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill! had a commentary track on the LD; maybe that and his other 3 commentaries will be ported to his US releases (I don't believe that they are on the imports).

His transfers for US have always been remastered from the original negatives so the quality has always been high on the domestic releases.

Right now he's running a buy two get one free offer (only 3 titles released and one is an hour long):

Cherry, Harry, and Raquel
Mondo Topless

Somewhat expensive, even with the "get one free", but WOW!!

Electric, have you seen these discs? Assuming one's a fan of Meyer (not a fanatical fan... just a casual fan), do you think these are worth the price?

ElectricTsunami 06-27-02 03:06 PM

I haven't seen these DVDs. I have the laser discs for many of his films. I am surprisingly missing the Up!/Cherry double feature LD and on ebay I could probably expect to pay $80. I also "need" Blacksnake but again don't feel compelled to complete my set for $80. The VHS tapes also looked real good. Image Entertainment distributed the laserdiscs.

Mondo Topless is fun but at 1 hour and no plot (it is more a documentary) you'll just have to consider it as a "bonus" for getting the other 2. 3 discs for $80 is a little over $25 a title, steep but not as bad as $40 each.

I'll get these DVDs sometime but they aren't a high priority. I really like Up! though. It doesn't sound like there are any extras. Russ' commentary tracks are somewhat interesting (Faster Pussycat was the worst as it spent too much time relating the screen action); the others Vixen, Supervixens, and Beneath The Valley of the Ultravixens have commentaries that describe some great annecdotes but that don't have much to do directly with the movies.

You may be able to convince an independent video store to stock them if they rent DVDs.

Russ Meyer's DVDs From France?
I'm curious, has anyone picked up any of the 6 Russ Meyer DVDS that were released in France? Are these legit? The prices are incredibly low. What is the quality? I see they are also Full Screen. Were any of these ever widescreen?

Thank you

Hendrik 08-11-02 03:28 AM

...a) yes, they are, or rather were 'legit' (see below)

...b) I've read that they are not that good to begin with

...c) they all have 'forced' French subtitles (non-removable)

...c) they are no longer available

...and there you have it...

...ahh... (note to myself)

...apparently the subs are optional, not 'locked' - at least for Pussycat...

...that said, the discs are (currently?) NLA... (yes, I did check the cinestore and alapage sites...
