What's smarter: Buying a region free dvd player or buying a PAL to NTSC converter?

I've been thinking of picking one of these up to go with a new 61" Hitachi widescreen. How good is the progressive scan, scaling, etc. compared to the panasonic. I want to watch some non R1 DVDs but not at the expense of an inferior picture quality for my R1's. Also, is $399 the best deal you can get for the DVP-520's?

I got mine for $280.00 USD from NBTelectronics.com
