TAKASHI MIIKE DVDs - already released and future releases(?)

I've moved my post to here, because I'm not getting much response from the 'DVD Talk' board:

I'm looking for any information on upcoming Takashi Miike DVDs.

With AUDITION coming out for Region 1 this Tuesday (6/4) and the R2 disc for DEAD OR ALIVE being released in the U.K. on 6/24, I was wondering if anyone knows of any others 'in the works' (preferably with English subtitles)?

I know about the following:

FUDOH - Region 0, 1 w/ Eng subs
DEAD OR ALIVE - Region 2 German, Region 2 UK w/ Eng. subs
ANDROMEDIA - Region 3 w/Eng subs (>$40US)
AUDITION - R3 w/ old Eng subs, various R2, R1 w/ new Eng. subs
CITY OF LOST SOULS - Region 0 (a 'flipper') w/Eng subs
VISITOR Q - Region 0(?) PAL German w/Eng. subs

More specifically:

There was a write-up in this months' 'Film Comment' magazine arguing for U.S. theatrical distribution for ICHI THE KILLER (it apparently played at the 'Walter Reade Theatre' in NYC).
Any word of a direct-to-DVD kind of thing?

I'd like to see ANDROMEDIA, but the R3 disc is over $40US at CDJapan. (and I think all of the others are not subtitled). Any other Regions in the future?

--- This probably wouldn't be on home video yet, but I REALLY want to find a copy of HAPPINESS OF THE KATAKURIS!!! ---

(And if you can get any of these - except AUDITION and CITY OF LOST SOULS - onto an NTSC VHS, with English subtitles, email me and we will work something out!)

thanks for any info you may give,

brandon

It might be totally unfounded, but I heard a rumor a while back that some US company -- maybe mediablasters? -- was working on DEAD OR ALIVE.
On a related note, I wonder if the UK censors are going to mangle the upcoming R2 release of that title...

i think the ANDROMEDIA disc you were referring to is in fact R2 (as are all Japanese discs). i believe there is a Taiwanese R3 with no subs.

VIZ has the north american rights for DEAD OR ALIVE and are working on the R1 DVD

Happiness of the Katakuris and Ichi are supposedly slated for Japanese DVD release on July 25th. not sure about subtitles, but somehow i doubt it

other miikes:

CITY OF LOST SOULS (Hazard City) JP R2 DVD w/ Eng Subs, excellent quality compared to the R0 HK flipper

Bird People in China JP R2 DVD, no subs, fansubs available
Rainy Dog JP R2 DVD, no subs, fansubs available
Guys from Paradise JP R2 DVD, no subs, fansubs available

Full Metal Gokudo JP R2 DVD, no subs
Mafia sensô Gokudo (Shinjuku Triad Society) JP R2 DVD, no subs
Making of 'Gemini' on the JP R2 GEMINI (Shinya Tsukamoto) DVD

Miike update

thanks for the responses so far.

Yes, the ANDROMEDIA disc is Region 2 (I mistyped that), but either way it's waaay too expensive to import......

The R2 disc of DEAD OR ALIVE is listed as 105 minutes at Blackstar. The IMDB has the same running time, so it looks like it's being released intact in the U.K. I don't if Tartan Video has a website (couldn't find it/didn't look hard enough), but you could double check there about whether it's uncut.....

It looks like VIZ's theatrical run for DEAD OR ALIVE ended almost two months ago. Their 'upcoming section' runs through August, and it's not on there, so it'll be awhile.....

I checked the MediaBlasters website (no mention of DEAD OR ALIVE), but they announced that they bought VISITOR Q and the following non-Miike at Cannes this year:

PISTOL OPERA (Seijun Suzuki's newest film!)
SAMURAI FICTION
VERSUS
PYROKENIS - CROSS FIRE
BOUNCE KO GALS
---and one i've been waiting on forever for a Eng. sub release,
Asia Argento's SCARLET DIVA !!!

VISITOR Q is even getting a theatrical run:
http://www.media-blasters.com/theatrical.cfm

Ju|ian:
Would you point me to any websites that have info on the HAPPINESS OF THE KATAKURIS and ICHI DVD releases? Or did you hear about these somewhere else?

....and I have no idea how fansubs work. Do you just print out a transcript and read along, or do you have to watch the DVD on a computer and run some kind of program over it, or what?

thanks again,

brandon

Tartan has the R2 UK rights to the following: Dead Or Alive 2, Dead Or Alive 3, City Of Lost Souls, Rainy Dog, Ley Lines and Shinjuku Triad Society.

Hong Kong Legends has Ichi The Killer. I think it is currently being checked by the BBFC.

If you already haven’t, you might wanna check www.bulletsnbabesdvds.com (news & forum). They have pretty good info about Asian cinema.

Miramax never had Versus. That was purely a net rumor gone wild.

Ichi release

ICHI THE KILLER is now available for pre-order (release date 6/28) from both www.dddhouse.com and www.dvdshelf.com

DVDShelf is the better deal if you order 5 or more DVDs (flat rate of HK$145 for up to 5 discs), DDDHouse charges shipping per item......

Here are the specs (according to DDDHouse) -

Starring : Tadanibu Asano, Paulyn Sun, Nao Omon, Shinya Tsukamoto
Rating : III (Action)
Directed by : Takashi Miike
Language : Japanese
DVD Subtitles : Chinese, English
DVD Audio : Dolby Digital Surround 5.1
DVD Region Code : All Code, NTSC
Release Date : 28-06-2002
Distributed by : Universe Laser

No mention if it's widescreen or fullscreen, but it's the only release that I know about - only US$12 shipped - and it comes out this Friday!!!

I read somewhere that Versus is coming to theaters...

I ordered Ichi from DDDHouse - I'll let you know if it's widescreen if you don't know by then.

It seems that it is cut by about 13 minutes

the Japanese title translates to "shooting hand flattering one"

It still got a III rating, why would it be cut??? Ok, maybe that's a dumb question.

IMDB.com has ICHI at 129 minutes. CDJapan has the Japanese disc (coming out on 7/25/02) at 128 minutes, and I saw a UK review listing it at 126 minutes. These all may be the same version of the film, since IMDB isn't the most reliable site for running times, especially for films that haven't hit home video yet.

Where did you see a running time for the DVD? Anyone know of a website that lists this info?

If anybody can read Japanese, I would be interested to know what the cover of the Universe Laser DVD says (especially the two lines in blue that end with exclamation points) - a pretty clear picture of it is up at www.dddhouse.com

thanks.

The CDJapan link is here, for those of you who would rather wait for the 'official Japanese release' ($40 is way too much for me to spend, even IF the DVD does have English subtitles):

A post from the AsianDVDGuide forum:

The Universe site clearly states that the running time of Ichi the Killer DVD is of 115 minutes. The film originally run 128 mins, and that's the running time CDJapan list for the japanese release (due to come out next month).

So, unless it is a mistake, I'm deeply sorry to admit that the HK release is indeed cut... by about 13 minutes.

That's a real shame.
I hope it's not true. I couldn't find anything on Universe's site. Trigger will have to let us know.

That thread also states it was cut in HK theaters, so it would be possible for the DVD to be as well...

it's true, someone on another forum got an email from dddhouse and they've confirmed that it's 115 min.. but dread not.. people do own the north american rights and we can perhaps expect an uncut R1 dvd in the coming year(s)..

I am disappointed

I just received the following email from DDDHouse.com :

" THIS IS AN AUTOMATIC EMAIL
> Hi,
> If you didn’t order “Ichi The Killer” dvd, no need to reply
> this email, if you have brought “Ichi The Killer” dvd, please
> read the following message and just response “Yes” or “No”,
> We will handle your order as per your instruction.
>
> Universe Laser made a mistake again on printing layout,
> "Ichi The Killer" DVD is region code 3 not region all code,
> please reconfirm to us again if you still need this item or not.
>
> Thanks
> Johnny
> "

So, not only is it cut (someone please post the link that lists the running time, to confirm), but is not all region. The region doesn't really matter to me, but for all of you that ordered at DVDShelf or somewhere else expecting to play it on your U.S. Region 1 players, I don't know if they sent out a notice like this one yet......

112 minutes a joke

That runtime is a joke, and not a funny one...Without the gimmicks there isn't much a movie left. Oh well to Japan we go.

Crap... they've really butchered Ichi

I have the dvd on order from dddhouse, but I've seen the uncut version, so I hope it's still watchable.

Is it true that media-blasters owns the US rights to Ichi?

Basically, the plot is that Kakihara, a Yakuza henchman is looking for his missing boss, so he tortures people to get information about his whereabouts. Meanwhile, Ichi, a nebbish kid, kills people creatively enough that he builds up a reputation, that ensure their paths cross.

It's a super movie, but if stuff's cut, I doubt it's worthwhile, since it operates on a visceral, gory level.

I watched the HK DVD this morning and it was amazing. Despite the cuts (a few of which were obvious), the move was still one of the most brutally violent I've ever seen and I'm not even sure it needs the additional violence. I'm sure I'll get an eventual uncut and subbed release but the HK version was definitely worth seeing.
