Ackkkkk! No Fantasia Film Festival this year...

The 2002 edition is postponed well, to summer 2003...

Crap! Where else can I expect to see films like JSA, Visitor Q, Cure, Heart of the Warrior, Millenium Actress, and Metropolis before everybody else does... What about my bragging rights huh!

"Montréal, May 15, 2002. The organizers of the FANTASIA Festival find themselves forced to postpone the 2002 festival... until the summer of 2003. The movie buffs and fans of this genre of film who have faithfully supported Fantasia throughout the last six editions must wait until summer 2003 to take part in the next edition of the festival.

On April 27, the management of the Imperial Cinema announced that they would be unsuccessful in completing the serious repairs that are necessary as a result of the present condition of the cinema roof, its plumbing and its air conditioning in time for the festival. These repairs are essential for normal operation of the cinema. For example, the air conditioning system is non-operational at present and must be replaced immediately. The organizers' decision to postpone the event until next summer was based on the impossibility of moving the festival to another venue with less than 10 weeks before the event.

"We want to reassure our public, states Pierre Corbeil, director and founder of the festival, Fantasia will return in July 2003. We will take advantage of this obligatory hiatus by obtaining the best films available, developing some new programming slots, approaching a larger number of sponsors, and seeking sufficient funding on the part of Québec government organizations to allow the Fantasia Festival, already recognized internationally as one of the three most important festivals of its kind, to pursue continued growth over the next years."

Anyone who has seen the impressive waiting lines outside of the Imperial Cinema at festival time knows that a special connection exists between the public and the movie house on Bleury Road. "It is with much enthusiasm that we are planning our return to the Imperial next year, as not only will the major repairs be completed, but the management of the theatre have assured us that there will be significant renovations to the building, which include expanding and improving the stage to accommodate the presentation of performances and special events."

So, this is not the end. The best is yet to come... in mid-July 2003. "
