International disc price search engine?

I'm not familiar with a multi-region, multi-format search engine. With different countries releasing the same title Japan, Australia, the US, and more for example all released Akira but the discs are loaded each with unique extras.

Not everyone can play PAL/NTSC or all regions. And then there is the fact that some companies won't ship internationally. Some discs also get retitled in other countries so finding the alternates may not always possible with an automated text search.

I've tested the waters with a number of foreign DVD retailers and have generally been satisfied enough not to hunt down "the best" price (best also being relative to postage). Sometimes it also is better to order several titles from a retailer at one time rather than ordering a single disc.

IMDB is okay at listing which films are available on DVD in the US, UK, and Germany (because they tie it to the Amazon.com databases for those countries) but what about France, Japan, and other Amazons? It also is only good as a first stop to pricing out a title once you've discovered it "exists".

Some titles can be purchased cheaper domestically from DVD importers in the US while other times it is cheaper to hunt down your own copies. Some domestic based DVD importers will even be cheap on some discs and pricey on others.

DVD available in UK (R2)

Fort Apache, the first of John Ford's cavalry trilogy is available in the UK. The other two are available in the U.S.

Hard Day's Night, A (1964), which is listed in the Japan section of the list, was released in the U.S. back in '98 or '99 by MPI. Up until recently, in fact, it was one of the more collectible DVDs on eBay and the like.
It will be re-released by Miramax on 9/24 as a 2-disc S.E.

livewiretoo 07-21-02 05:43 PM

Serpico, in 16x9, in Japan on 7/28.

found one, but it looks like this is only up for pre-order, but it doesn't list a street date.
also, the price is pretty steep (almost $30 + whatever shipping charges)

Well, it's definitely out (I have it). Unfortunately, there is only a French dubbed option and an English w/French subtitle option. But no English with NO subtitle option.

I'd imagine that there are some players out there that could remove the subs (they *are* removable... since the dubbed version doesn't have them). But my APEX 600A can't do it. Still, I can live with subtitles on this... it's not like it's going to get a better release any time soon. ;)

Hows the transfer, otherwise?
if i can find it for a decent price (not $30), i'd probably get it.

This would be a great title for Anchor Bay, they've dug up a lot more obscurer titles than this before.

any recs as far as where to order it?

ScreachingWeasel 07-30-02 01:42 PM

I didn't see this on the list. Barton Fink is available from France it looks like it came out this month. Anamorphic widescreen, but it doesn't look like there are any special features. Still 14.99 seems like a decent price to maybe pick it up until the the US release next year.

Here is the link at Cinestore.

Jungle 2 Jungle is also available in England, Italy, and Germany (R2)...all 16 x 9 widescreen. While it is finally arriving on DVD in Region 1, it appears that the October U.S. DVD release will be a Pan&Scan job, so the Region 2 or Region 4 discs will be the only way to own the movie in OAR.

A few updates and an addition from Italy.

>>>>>>>>NEW ADDITION

ITALY (R2 - PAL)
Blood and Wine. Jack Nicholson/Stephen Dorff. DD2.0. Excellent anamorphic 1.85:1 (approx) picture. This does have locked Italian subtitles when watching the English track -can be removed on many players

>>>>>>>>UPDATES

DENMARK (R2 - PAL)
Driver, The (1978) Widescreen / English audio / optional Danish subtitles
I have this excellent Walter Hill film -and I can confirm it's anamorphic 1.85:1 (approx). Definitely a much better release than the German and Japanese discs. The distributor's site is www.on-air-video.dk

GERMANY (R2 - PAL)
Lost Highway (1997)
This is anamorphic -5.1 DD English. Excellent transfer -although some people have had lip synching problems. Comes in a Super Jewel case.

SPAIN (R2 - PAL)
Short Cuts (1993) Anamorphic 2.35:1 (seems slightly wider in fact). DD2.0. Excellent transfer.

CABARET

I note a 30th anniversary DVD of CABARET (REGION 2). The extras seem the same on the Region one released in 1998. Anyone know if the picture is improved though the original 98 release seems fine. thanks!

Hey everyone,

I'll be updating the list soon. I took a little time off the computer due to being in the hospital with some health problems for a bit, but everything is a-okay now. :)
