HKflix sells the Thakral Drunken Master here, although it is really expensive.

You can also check eBay to maybe find a cheaper version. In fact I picked up an extra copy off of eBay that I can trade (email me for more info).

The Tai Seng DVD, by contrast, has good subtitles and image quality, and I personally think WC is one of her top films.
I'm following up an old post again, but I just got my copy of Wing Chun from AsianDiscs.com. They show the pink cover on their site and after reading here & some other places I was bummed about the prospect of burned in subs (already went through that in August with the Vanguard release of "Felicidades") - but it turns out they sent me the Modern Video version which has removable subs.

Haven't watched it all the way through, but I did page through it quickly and discovered there's a gross trailer for some horror movie after the closing credits.......

"I'm following up an old post again"

Well, hey, I don't mind!

For Michelle Yeoh fans, I read a little while ago that a North American release of Magnificent Warriors is pending. This isn't her best film by any means, but the HK DVD of it that I have is awful, with really messed-up 5.1 audio.

Good lord - I didn't even notice. Thanks... fixed. DVDTalk should've informed me.

Just a warning, this version is improperly cropped to 1.78:1 as well. I've got the US 2.35 version and kept my old video tape as backup.

I have a question or 2 Trigger. I'm new to the whole HK dvd scene and I wonder how do you spot bootlegs. Specifically, I want to buy a couple of discs to empty my Paypal account (until I'm no longer poor to buy more) and so I wanted to use Ebay. Most of what I see are factory pressed R0 discs with english subtitles. How do you know if these are bootlegs or not. I want to get Versus but it only comes out in July here I think, but there are plenty of copy on Ebays with the same boxarts as HKFlix so I can't tell if they are bootlegs of not. Same with Battle Royal R0, exact same boxart (although one said the subtitles were subpar).

Can I expect these to be bootlegs or imports? Normally I do anime so I can easily spot those bootlegs, but for live action movies, I don't have a clue in the world. Should I maybe just stick to DDDhouse or is there a safe way to spot them on Ebay?

Second question, although I doubt anyone will know. Does Mongolia have good places to get legit dvd's in the capital? My brother is moving there for a few years and I want to get him to send me some dvd's if they are low priced (and legit- not the plastic bag on the side of the street kind).

Dragon's Inn has a great commentary and so does Master of the Flying Guillotine Ultimate Edition. Also Hard Boiled and The Killer have pretty good commentaries by John Woo.

And most, if not all, Versus dvds on ebay (unless they say Region 2 and are $50) are bootlegs. Just wait for the R1 release. It's going to be exactly the same as the Japanese one but with subtitles on the extras and probably on the commentaries (or brand new commentaries...not sure) except a lot cheaper. As for Battle Royale...there's so many releases of this movie it's not funny. Expect to pay more than $20 for a legitimate release of it unless it's the R3 release (in which case is $5). All the boots seem to cost around $20. The Starmax R0 korean one is not a boot and the Tartan releases (usually above $30) aren't boots either. If you just want the Honk Kong R3 dvd of Battle Royale just get it at dddhouse unless you see someone on ebay not price gouging it.

Thanks, I realize that many have commentary tracks - I'm specifically looking for HK releases with commentary tracks in Chinese - that have subtitles for the commentary tracks.

layoyo.com

I was thinking of buying from layoyo.com (AKA DVDShelf.com) but a lot of their DVDs are listed as being 4:3, for example, The Duel and Storm Riders. Does anyone know if this is a mistake in the listing or what? I've never seen an HK dvd that was not widescreen...

Thanks

There are some of the older HK movies that are in fullscreen mode. Not too many, mostly from Mei Ah. In the case of The Duel and Storm Riders, both are widescreen - the Duel at 1.85:1 and Storm Riders at 2.35:1.

Hi,

I have just received a dvd (movie) from the U.S -
As its a Region 1 (NTSC) and I'm from the U.K can anybody throw some light on how I can actually get this dvd to work...

I've tried it on a multi-region player but keep getting the same message.. 'Non region' - - etc...

Thanks in advance....

Sure,

I can safely say that your player likely has two problems. Since you are in the U.K., your system is PAL. Therefore, since your dvd is NTSC, you will need a player that will play NTSC dvds, but i'm not sure if yours will do that. This is a problem especially since your tv is likely only capable of displaying a PAL signal. Your second problem is that your DVD player likely does not support non region 2 DVDs. You will need to pick up a region free DVD player or go to this site to find out if your DVD player is firmware hackable: http://www.dvdrhelp.com/

Good Luck!

I've been planning on doing an update... I'm open to suggestions. I think I'm gonna include Korean and Japanese films and expand it form HK cinema to Asian cinema.

It is my understanding that most TVs in the UK can display both PAL and NTSC, so I'm thinking the problem might be that you picked up a Region 1 DVD that had RCE which would make an all region dvd player incapable of playing it. If you can set the DVD players region to Region 1, it should play just fine. Try playing it on your PC. There is also a thread somewhere on DVD talk that lists RCE encoded DVDs I think.

Iron Monkey PE, etc.

I know Hong Kong Legends are releasing the Iron Monkey Platinum Edition in a few weeks. Does anyone know if it will be uncut, as I know a few of their discs are censored? In addition, I'm interested in picking up Drunken Master and The Killer, even though I already have the Criterion. Are these uncut and does anyone know if special HKLegends editions are planned? Finally, the R1 Columbia/Tristar edition of Drunken Master had bad audio elements and the Cantonese (or Mandarin, I don't remember) original language track cut to English in some moments. Is this problem inherent to the HKLegends disc as well? Thanks for any help.

I don't mind subtitles that much, but navigating the Chinese setup and options menus are making me crazy. Anybody know of a cheat sheet I could print out to get me;

English subtitles
DTS or 5.1 sound
Widescreen
Japanese dialog (this is often the key to the good sound sound track)
Play the movie

Thanks.

I thought I would add to the recommended movies/dvd's list....

Hong Kong action

Naked weapon (recommended two-disc version Hong Kong legends region 2 DTS)

Korean movies

The warrior also known as Musa (recommended version two-disc premier Asia region 2 DTS)

Bichunmoo(recommended version two-disc premier Asia region 2 DTS)

Martial-arts wire fu

Iron monkey Platinum Edition 2 disc Hong Kong legend DTS version (I know this isn't an new recommendation but a quality DVD nevertheless)

Hero (starring Jet Li and Donnie Yen) in US cinemas right now and an excellent movie. A definite for crouching tiger fans and a much better film!

Minimal wires martial-arts

Tiger cage starring Donnie Yen

Kiss Of the Dragon starring Jet Li

Fist of legends starring Jet Li

In the line of duty starring Donnie Yen

That's a great post -silver29-.... with all the different versions out there, lots of buyers a confused as to which one to buy. Also, with Hong Kong movies that are already out on DVDs overseas... some are picked up by US Studios (Sony, MiraMax, Lions Gate, etc...) should we wait for those or go ahead and pick up the (many different) import version.

Can someone also list which is the recommended version (studio) to buy for the following? And where to buy? THX!

HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS (Zokes?)(is SONY also releasing this in Dec.2004? http://www.apple.com/trailers/sony/h...ngdaggers.html)
HERO (180min. Extended Ed?)
LEGEND OF ZU (MiraMax releasing this? http://www.apple.com/trailers/miramax/zu_warriors.html)
STORM RIDERS
INFERNAL AFFAIRS I, II, III

Avoid the ZOKE Release of House of flying daggers:
http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDCom...ingdaggers.htm

The EDKO Is the best so far, but I think a Starmax one is out soon and they usually do a great job.

For hero, I'd recommend the "Ultimate Edition"

Infernal Affairs has a boxset that just came out (or still is) if you can get it.
