You shouldn't have any problems. I have a Malata and it plays my 2 French (Region 2) DVDs just fine. What did you get? I just purchased the anamorphic versions of Cube and Happiness from Amazon.fr

.
"...I was looking to order, a couple of old comedies with Louis de funes - La grande vadrouille, les gendarmes etc..."

...in case you didn't know, all six Gendarme movies are available as a set:

http://www.dvdfr.com/dvd/fiche.php3?id=4614

NOTE: these movies all feature anamorphic widescreen transfers, mono sound (French) as well as souped-up 'arkamysé' sound (also French) ... and no subtitles in any language...

...Le Grand Restaurant features an optional (shudder!) English dub - but no English subs...
http://www.dvdfr.com/dvd/fiche.php3?id=646
...as does La Folie des Grandeurs
http://www.dvdfr.com/dvd/fiche.php3?id=583
...and so does Hibernatus
http://www.dvdfr.com/dvd/fiche.php3?id=5272
...ditto for Oscar
http://www.dvdfr.com/dvd/fiche.php3?id=1094

...the Fantômas movies starring Jean Marais and de Funès are French-language only...

. . . . . .

Hendrik,

Are you 100% sure that movies:

La Follie des Grandeurs
Hibernatus
Oscar

contain optional English dub???

Cinestore, Alapage and other sites do not provide this information. According to Cinestore La Follie has optional Arabic and German dub but no English.

Dvdfr provides also information that "La Chevre" (20-th anniversary edition) has English dub, but the screenshots of the menu of this DVD do not support this information.

I doubt that any of these DVDs have English dub.

I forgot to add "Le grand restaurant" to the list. All sources (Cinestore, Alapage) do not confirm information that it has English dub.

It is sure that the only Luis De Funes DVDs with English dub is

"La Follie des Grandeurs"

(menu screen shots at dvdfr.com confirms it)

It might be possible that "Oscar" may also have English dub, but there are no menu screen shots to confirm it.

Le Grand Restaurant and Hibernatus were released without English dub or subtitles. The earlier dvdfr.com information about English dub has been corrected.
