HKL's POLICE STORY 2 dvd is still worth owning, despite a BIG flaw

I am going to update this review shortly. Who knew the cropping was so severe. I know I didn't.

That Matt Stevens sure gets around, don't he?

Good review of what looks like a good disc. It seems other reviewers concur.

I'm waiting for Bensons to send mine as a replacement for the twice-defective Blacksheep Affair DVD.

Twice, Dang! You can't get a break with those Medusa discs can you? I actually returned a bad set of Medusa titles recently. Their website has this to say:

Special note for DVD customers
We advise all DVD customers to check a disc with a suspected fault on a second make and model of DVD Player before calling for a Return Authorisation. As all our DVD software is made to a predefined industry standard, we cannot accept responsibility for incompatibilities caused by machines not made specifically for the UK market, or budget models which are not designed to play back high-specification DVD software.

Yeah. My computer is region free too. Those screwed up HKL discs don't work on anything.

I watched it just this a few nights ago and while the picture quality wasn't up to far with most other HKL discs, it certainly was watchable. A great movie too! My only complaint about HKL discs is when they give a movie a 5.1 soundtrack - the rear speakers barely get any use.

They use the rears for music and ambience. This is done to stay true to the nature of the original mono, while increasing bass and fullness to the mix. I think it's a wise choice. It's also due to the horrid condition of the elements. Expanding the soundtracks to true balls to the walls 5.1 would resort in some serious distortion.

The HKL Police Story 2 cover looks really really cheesy. The pic of Jackie holding that badge is also on the HK version and its looks really really fake. (probably because the pic was editied to show him holding a badge)

But i do like that menu..

mmmmm.....Maggie Cheung

So Matt, I'm guessing you no longer feel this way about the Police Story 2 DVD...

Just thought I'd bring the discussion here so DVDtalkers can be informed as well.

Things are no so good...

I saw cropping when I first reviewed it, but figured they were hiding splices. I had no idea it was so badly cropped. After comparing it directly to every version I can get my hands on, I must say, the cropping is severe and have fired off a letter to HKL.

That being said, the transfer is STILL much better than ANY other version. Same for the subtitles.
