REVIEW: Marry A Rich Man

Marry A Rich Man

Director: Vincent Kok
Casts: Sammi Cheng , Richie Ren, Candy Lo, Woo Fung

Synopsis:
Average girl, Ah Me (Sammi Cheng), wants to fullfill the dream of every Hong Kong princess; to rope in a rich man as a husband. She decides that Milan, Italy is the place to meet someone rich, and takes a first class flight overseas. During the flight, she meets Ah Dan (Richie Ren).
Could this be the rich man of her dreams?

Movie review:
Yes, this has a standard romantic comedy plot, and things are kinda perdictable, but the high production quality and Sammi's natural performance makes this movie enjoyable. Sammi is very relaxed here, and her scenes comes off like she's just being herself. I did feel some traits of her Mini Mo character from Love On A Diet were here too. Maybe that's just Sammi...
Richie's performance was OK, but outshined by the supporting casts. There wasn't much chemistry between Sammi and Richie, so their pairing felt somewhat forced. Luckily, they don't spend the whole movie together.
Believe it or not, there's CGI used in this movie! The whole opening sequence is a flight through space along the planets, all nicely rendered in CGI, and some other scenes (I can't mention them as it'd be a spoiler!) Thankfully, the CGI wasn't used on the main storyline.
The scenes in Italy are quite beautiful, as we are treated some to great locations.
Watch out for a cameo by the guy that played the leader of the street gang from Shaolin Soccer. It's supposed to be a touching moment, but it's hilarious!

DVD Review:
Image is very good. It is clear and sharp, with good colour saturation. This DVD was mastered from a pristine print, as there is almost no flaws. What little there is, is hardly noticeable.
Compression artifacts were not noteciable, but at this low bit-rate, larger displays will prabably show some less than perfect DVD mastering. Compression bit-rates vary between 2MB to 6MB. Average is at 4.5MB.
Golden Harvest is fast becoming one of the top DVD producers in Hong Kong. Para Para Sakura and 2002 were also very good DVDs, and this release keeps up the same good standards. Golden Harvest does need to look into DVD-9 format for higher compression bitrates, and most importantly, 16:9 enhancements.

Subtitles are medium sized, white with black border, and positioned on the image.
The grammer is good, with only some spelling errors.

Audio is clean and clear, with some good use of surrounds.
Volume is quite low, so cranking up the dial is needed.

Recommended for Sammi Cheng, or romantic comedy fans.
Movie rating: 7/10
