I have the R2 French edition and think its beautiful with no reason to upgrade to any Criterion edition....What more could Criterion do but a commentary?

Without a region-free player, the Criterion version seems to be a no-brainer.

I have the French release, and will pickup the Criterion R1 version also, just to have an R1 NTSC copy, as I am in Canada

It will be interesting to see the specs for the Mei Ah Special Edition. It could be the French version converted to NTSC/R0
But if it's just a transfer from PAL to NTSC, the speedup will still be there. Mei Ah does not exactly have a good track record for DVD releases...

Prabably safer to wait for Criterion's release

I have a silght suspicion there would be a special edition especially after I read about an All-region edition in City Entertainment Magazine from Hong Kong. Then right now I just saw a picture of the All-region DVD(From Tartan)for sale for 210 HK dollars in Hong Kong in the "Next Magazine" also from Hong Kong. I just hope this is for real because I am definitely gonna look for it when I go back for Christmas.

I currently have the less than stellar Hong Kong version, but since I have the French version on the way, I guess that would get my vote. If it's as good as I've been reading, I doubt I'll bother with the Criterion version even if it is NTSC with no speedup problem. Since purchasing my Malata I've been watching so many PAL discs that I've become use to the speedup.

Prices are great, but you have to deal with ordering via email and using paypal to pay. I've placed a large order with them and I'm happy with it - I'm placing another large order soon.

I have the R2 french one, just thought some people would like to know this is available... it looks like a Tin, so some people might jump on it for that reason. They make awesome DVDs in Korea. I had the original Mei Ah DVD and it sucked. I'm sure the newer one is better, but it can't be as good as the French one I have or this one.

It's all about the Tin case... man~~~

Well, I would not consider the French version since it doesn't even have Mandarin subtitles on it.

Even though I can't understand French, I believe the supplementary stuff for the French version is the same with that of the newer R3 HK version. After all, this movie IS from HK

Plus, the HK version has dts 5.1 and it is much cheaper than the French version.

Sure the Korean Tin looks nice and fully loaded and is not overly priced, but it still does not have dts not to mention having to deal with paypal.

I am sure any of these versions would be good alternatives for the R1 criterion version, which received rave reviews.

krdvd is working on puting up a new site with ordering options, it should be up soon, i talked to them via e-mail and they said they are working a few bugs out.

if you e-mail them you can get shipping rates, and they send you a total back then you send them money via paypal and they send your dvds.

i would wait a couple days and see if they get the new site up.

Here's another reputable place (from what I've heard):

http://www.dvd.co.kr/good_view.asp?gd=S0207030001

The website has the release for 2002.08.14 ~ 2002.08.21.

don't you need a resident registration number that only a korean citizen has to register with www.dvd.co.kr to order with them?

In the Mood for Love - R1 or R2UK?

i was going to buy the UK 2-disc set, because DVD Beaver's review suggested that the transfer on the Criterion release isn't as good as it should be compared to the R2.. but now i'm reading conflicting reviews, some suggesting the UK release only has a 2.0 audio track, others saying it's a 5.1 like the not-available French 2-disc set.. can anyone confirm that the UK release only has a 2.0 track?

The UK 2-disc release is just a port of the French 2-disc.
As for which one looks better, I suspect it will be more up to what your display is calibrated for, PAL or NTSC, or, if you have separate calibrations memories for each, where you did it best.
I have both the French 2-disc release and the Criterion release, and while I haven't done any direct AB-test, my impression is that the French is marginally closer to what I saw in the cinema.

Why is this now a poll? There are several countries in Region 2 and several (multiple) versions of the Region 2 disc. This poll is therefore useless if the options remain the same

There are 2 releases in the UK.

Get the 2 disc. It has a sumptious image. Stunning.

If you want beautiful packaging to go with it, get the French set (there are 3 and 2 are now rare (both 2 discers).

The UK 2 disc is a direct port of the French set (minus the fancy packagaing).

Wonderful film.
