Young and Dangerous
Alright, so I'm eight movies into the Young and Dangerous series (Y&D 1-5, Prequel, Born To Be King, Those Were The Days), and I can't seem to figure out why the same actors keep on showing up after their characters die in their initial appearances in the series. Is it supposed to be some type of reincarnation deal? I am without a clue. Maybe if someone that knows the comic series is able to shed some light, that'd be great. Thanks.

Small acting pool. You weren't supposed to notice. (Heh!). After each movie we guessed on who would should up in the next movie as either (a brother, good guy, a bad guy..)

as I recall only a couple of the characters get reincarnated, if you watched them in the right sequence. Jason Chu is killed as Chow Pan in the first episode and reincarnates as a fellow in parts 2/3/4 as Banana Peel (the apparent likeness to Chow Pan is commented on briefly by Dai Tin Yee). Roy Cheung the Holland killer is killed in 3 and comes back as a behind-the-scenes politician in 4, which was kinda confusing. Shu Qi does get whacked in Portland Street Blues but I think it came out after 5, where she was the disciple of that fat dude with the cane (who in real life is Wong Jing's father).
If you can think of others let me know and I'll try to explain. |
RC also came back in Born to Be King.

Didn't see a use in starting another thread, but I was wondering if I could get some opinions on this series. I really like Ekin Cheng, but know nothing about this series.
Just wondering if everyone could pitch in their views. Thanks in advance. :D |
I would say that it is very heavy on character development and not very heavy on the violence associated with triads. Don't get me wrong, there is always a couple of good fight scene in it. Somewhat like the Sopranos, it get's addicting after you watch the first two in the series. Number 5 is an absolute atrocity. I think although they brand Ekin as the lead character, Jordan Chan's character shines past him. If you are going to get the series you really need to go from 1 to 5, the prequel can be thrown in anywhere then Those Were the Days, then Born to be King.
I just watched Born to Be King again this weekend. I think it might the best in the series (and throwing in Sonny Chiba raised the bar a bit). |

Did anyone see the remastered DVD of Young and Dangerous 3? I am looking forward to collect the whole series when new releases are available. |
i heard it's not anamorphic.
although the fact that it is in 5.1 and DTS worries me a little bit. i hope this audio upgrade isn't that bad. |
I loved the entire series. It's definitely worth watching. Like axolotls said, after a movie or two, you really get used to the characters and their development is nice to watch. I find the best are the first two. The fourth, in my mind is the worst, but still watchable.
As for the side stories, I haven't really watched them, but I want to see all the movies again before I see them. In addition to the ones alerady mentioned, you also have Portland Street Blues, The Legendary Tai Fei, Century of the Dragon and War of the Underworld. Those are probably distant side stories, but Portland Street Blues does have Sister 13's story, and Legendary Tai Fei does have, well, Tai Fei's story. I thought the actors getting offed and coming back was funny as well. It was fun to watch who would come back. SPOILER Also, Shu Qi gets killed in PSB but I think she plays a different character in the two YnD movies she's in. She plays a different role in the prequel as well. It was kind of funny to see Roy Cheung (and Raymond Wong and Micheal Tse) coming back a bunch of times. You'd think he'd get tired of being killed after a while. It was also also funny to see Tse being a good guy for a few episodes then get whacked in 4 and come back as a bad guy in 5 (or 6, I can't remember now). NO MORE I would actually welcome another part in the series, although I don't know what Andrew Lau would do. It probably wouldn't be as good as the others but I want to know what happened to the surviving, unreincarnated characters. :) |
I'd still like to see a continuation as well...I was hooked on the series and the spinoffs immediately after watching them...It was like getting to know a family and wanting to see what happened to them...About every few months I'll pop in the dvd's and rewatch the entire series...if they ever did do more, they would have to get the core characters back though...the continuity is what made Y and D.
