Brotherhood of the Wolf (Pacte des Loups)2001
Hey, I just saw this at the Boston Film Festival, and would have to say it's a pretty cool movie, and definitely the first kung-fu werewolf movie set in 18th century France that I've seen.
A mysterious giant wolf-like beast is killing a lot of peasants in rural France, so they send in a French army captain and his Mohawk blood brother, who have just returned from the Americas, to help get the beast. I'm not exactly sure why, but the Captain and the Mohawk are both kungfu masters ! OK, it sounds like it wouldn't work, and there were a couple moments when the HK style action/heroics seemed a little silly, but overall I thought this was a really interesting, unique and well-done mix of a bunch of disparate genres. I haven't seen the Musketeer, but from the reviews I've read I would have to think this movie is more successful at blending HK action into a period European piece. Some quite high production values, a good story and strong acting, with some sweeping cinematography and impressive action sequences. If the plot sounds interesting to you, I would definitely recommend it--I thought it was a pretty unique movie.

...ahh... to live in Region2/France (and understand spoken and written French!) so one could enjoy the three(!)-disc, limited, numbered Collector's Edition coming out in November...

It does indeed look very cool! I don't know if the movie itself is that good...

Wow, that looks like a cool DVD. Oh, and I believe this was released theatrically in France earlier this year (I think it was a big hit), and it's scheduled for a limited US release in November, and maybe a wider release in the new year.
