Tower Records Toronto Closing Shop!

The writing was on the wall and the fat lady is singing it... or something. At any rate, those fine citizens of Hogtown have an opportunity to pad their DVD collections once again now that the Yonge and Queen location of Tower Records is closing its doors.

Currently all product is 25% off the marked price (with all books being 70% off). Soon, however, if this sale follows the trends set by the last Tower Records closing, the prices will be down to 50% off. Here's hoping some people can keep a closer eye on proceedings at Towerville.

Thanks for the heads up. Is Towers a Canadian or US company? Does there website's pricings match there store pricing so I know what I can compare with when I go scouting for the best price?

Where does there store close? Is there a offical closing date or is it like some close outs that when the last item is sold the store closes.

I think it might be a set date

I remember when the store here in Boston closed (they since re-opened a new store right across the road from Fenway Park) they had a set date, whatever did not sell was packed up and moved into the new store

I don't happen to like the new store (2 floors as opposed to the old 3 floor one, which is becoming a Virgin Records Megastore), but thus is the breaks

The entire Tower chain is like "this close" to utter collapse.

A buddy of mine who works for one of the downtown Chicago branches has indicated that he has taken to scanning his in-box daily for the inevitable pink slip. The company in deep, deep in debt - to the tune of $200 million or something. With the current dip in the economy, there's no way they can stay afloat. (Unless there is some last minute buyout deal with Columbia House or BMG or something similar.)

Expect this fire sale to spread to all the Tower outlets soon.

Well Tower Records didn't do anyone in Toronto any favors by staying open as long as it did.

They had a fantastic selection of CDs, and an impressive selection of DVDs... but their prices were just insane.
I've seen many DVDs which were priced $10 - $15 than other stores.

I will however miss the (comparatively speaking) good collection of Sony SACDs they had in stock. And surprisingly, they were reasonably priced.

Again, anyone know exactly when the Toronto store is closing?

I will be up October 15-26 on business and would stop in to see if there are any "deals".......

So, lets say a Tower Records B&M closes shop.

Historically speaking, will they just up and shut the doors one morning, or will they give notice (ie. a clearance sale)?

Tower Records Closing in Canada

I can't find the old thread but I"m sure a mod would be more then happy to merge thise with the thread if they find it (thanks mod if you do ^_^

Was at the TOwers Records yesterday in Toronto at Eatns Centre.

Wanted to update people. There selection is so-so now. THey got some no name dvd's around for like $44.00 something liek a documentary of middle east or something like that. THey also got exersise dvd's. Last chage about 10 dvd's left.

For VHS they have some anime kicking around. I saw about 5 Street Fighter videos. THey also got about like 10 more taps of anime there. THere was a Saber MArionette J there Episode 3+ tape for $7.99 .

Everything on in the store is 60% off. Top level is all $1.99 cd's. THe ground floor is a mix of stuff. Last check if you got kids with a Pokemon craze, I got 4-5 pokemon cd's which I was going to buy then decided not to. If you're going there to look for stuff and want the pokemon cd's I stashed them in the back isle in the same roll as the dvd's.

If you're driving down, you know parking is a total *beep*. If you can get a parking spot anywhere within walking distance pay the $2.00 for one hour. I'm sure you won't use the whole hour. I put in 1 hour and 30mins but I only used up like 20-30mins scanning the cds and I found nothing I wanted.

I hope this helps someone going to check it out and saves them some time with my warnings.

Whenever I drive across 405 to get to the Bellevue store (Seattle region), there never seems to be that many people actually buying things in the store. I expect that 3-story store to go belly-up sooner or later because it HAS GOT TO BE LOSING MONEY. It is next door to a Barnes & Noble superstore and since B&N controls the parking lot, B&N has instituted a no-parking for Tower customers type "ban" in the hopes of choking Tower to death (B&N has free parking whilst Tower has limited pay parking, and B&N has seized upon that weakness like a pit bull). B&N even has a live parking attendant watching the lot. It's too bad (Tower has the best variety of DVD). Whilst BestBuy has more total DVD bodycount (many duplicates stocked in depth though), Tower doesn't stock in depth and chooses to stock in breadth across the catalogue.

Tower Records has a preliminary listing in www f**kedcompany com discussion forum...

Towers in Canada about to close. WWW next?

Quick update, Towers in Toronto closes Oct 7/2001. I ould like ot know if the WWW is closing next and if the US stores are closing anytime soon?

WIll there be any online clearance sales or will the stock be pushed to all US walk in stores? It's be better if the stock was online and at the same clearance pricing so web shoppers can cash in on the savings.

Bump because it looks like this Toronto bricks and mortar store sale has just a day more to run.

On a related noted, I was wondering if anyone else had thoughts on the suggestion that Region 1 Canada counts as International for the purpose of the various DVDTalk forum specialities: link

In the scheme of things it is no big deal but feedback can be useful in shaping policy in some regards.

As the shop was scheduled to close by now I think the thread can, too!
