newbie just found out about the region codes. need hack for toshiba sd-1700
 

I was looking for season 2 of the Sopranos, but they are all r2. the r1 version doesn't get released until nov 6, and who knows when season 3 will be released for r1. i am addicted to the sopranos and i don't get hbo. if someone can give me the hack code for the toshiba sd-1700, i would be very grateful.

As far as I know, there are no handset hacks for any Toshiba model. Probably your only recourse (other than buying a region free player!) would be to send your model into a codefree company (ie. Upgrade Heaven) who will install a hardware hack into your player.

Other brands that don't have handset hacks include: Panasonic, Sony, Pioneer and Sharp.

what is a really cheap dvd player that i can hack? if i can get one for less than 100 bucks i'll keep my toshiba and just use the hacked one for region 2. i'm assuming any cheap dvd player won't last forever, so just using it for region free playing should make it last a while.

even on some of the so-called hackable machines (Apex, Shinco, etc), some of them have had firmware upgrades such that remote hacks do not work anymore without some decent effort. With chip modifications, unless you're handy with a soldering iron, I wouldn't really recommend doing it yourself. You can have someone do a mod, but the cost is usually the cost of a brand new DVD player.

Not saying that it can't be done, but if you're looking for an easy solution, you'll have do some legwork.

One of those Malata players sounds pretty good at this point.

Here's another vote for the Malata. You can buy a progressive scan, multiple region, pal/ntsc conversion dvd player, for 289 bucks shipped.

Sorry for the hyperbole, but this is a great deal.

if i start getting into international dvd's i will definitely pick up the malata 996. what exactly is the difference between PAL and NTSC? What are they?

They are the video standards -

NTSC is used in the USA/Canada (not sure about Central and South America), and Japan.

PAL, which has more lines on the screen and provides (imho) a marginally better image, is used in Europe, Asia (despite the fact that most Hong Kong DVDs seem to be in the NTSC format), and Australasia.
