Must-get R2 discs?
Hi guys.. I'm heading to the UK in less than 2 weeks and so far, here's my list of DVDs to pick up while I'm there:
Big Boss Fist Of Fury The Elephant Man La Reine Margot (Queen Margot) Beau Travail The Girl On The Bridge Drive Armour Of God Chungking Express Once Upon A Time In China The Canterbury Tales A Bout De Souffle (Breathless) La Dolce Vita The Idiots Richter - The Enigma Raging Bull 2-disc 20th Anniversary Collector's Set Any recommendations for other must-get discs while I'm there? Thanks! |
La Haine(Hate)
I just watched La Haine last night and it was pretty good. The subtitles were pretty bad though. When they were on a white surface they were almost unreadable, but it was still a good film despite that. The picture quality was a little lacking too. The movie is a day in the life of some French project kids. Whose friend was beaten by cops and is the hospital. It follows their confrontaions with the cops and friends.

i'd say ouatic 2, iron monkey, way of the dragon, drunken master, and snake in eagle's shadow

Depends on what you're into:
Buffy (S1, S2 & possibly S3) Lock Stock (Director's Cut) The Krays |
Two Jean -Claude VanDamme classics that aren't available widescreen (dvd) in the U.S.,Timecop and Sudden Death.
|
Don't forget the "Tripods" :D
|
If you like European movies, a really nice disc of Lotte Reiniger's "The Adventures of Prince Achmed" has just been released in the UK.
See http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/...751225-3499010 for a few more details. |
I'd also add "Sexy Beast" (which just came out about 2 weeks ago), "Chopper", and "Gangster Number One" to the list as well if you are into those types of films... All excellent (imho) films which aren't yet available in the USA (and probably won't be for a while).
Happy hunting! John |
I'd highly recommend the French action film Dobermann which is only available subbed on UK DVD. It's one of the most over-the-top action flicks I've seen in a long time.
Synopsis: Ruthless, cunning and sexy, The Dobermann is a class-A criminal for the 21st Century. Along with his stunning partner Nat the Gypsy, The Dobermann leads a crazy gang of bank robbers into one of the most daring heists of all time. Fearless, insane and packing some of the most awesomely hi-tech weaponry ever seen, Dobermann and his gang are thirsty for action. Hot on their trail is renegade cop Christini who will break every rule, legal and moral, to personally dispose of The Dobermann. Christini sets a merciless trap for arch enemy and his gang which culminates in a relentlessly explosive confrontation, finally bringing the two evils face to face... A visually stunning cocktail of gun play, adrenalin fuelled action, dazzling special effects and a pumping soundtrack featuring The Prodigy, Dobermann is a frenetic assault on your senses. http://www.blackstar.co.uk/img/video...0/05/50/68.jpg |
Being Australian myself, I feel duty bound to second the recommendation for Chopper -smile- and will add the following highly recommended titles:
The Ring - Japanese horror film that rates as one of the best of the genre anywhere on the planet The Ring 2 - sequel to the above Ripping Yarns - the Complete Box Set - if you like Monty Python, Blackadder, Fawlty Towers etc, then you will love this very surreal series put together by Michael Palin of Monty Python fame. regards, Tim... |
I've heard that the UK DVD of The Krays is not widescreen. Anyone know about that? Can't seem to find a review anywhere -- why are the UK DVD review sites so awful? They only seem to review the most popular and obvious titles. Anyone know of any decent Uk or Euro-sites that actually do a good job?

since you tend to like hong kong action. i suggest HKL's New Dragon Gate Inn. you won't be disappointed. :-)
