Originally posted by RaMMaR It's available now. i think IVL released this last year? As for why should anyone get Flying Guillotine? Well, think of it like 36th Chamber. You get to see the construction of the guillotine and how they trained to use it. It's also cool how Chen Kuan Tai figures to counter it. Taken much more seriously than Master of the Flying Guilloine. Originally posted by devilshalo ... Well, I just wonder since they cut the scene between Jade Unicorn's wife and his Advisor in the Water Margin. |
Originally posted by RaMMaR Oh... i didn't know that. Maybe it's for the same reason that Ky-Fi mentioned happened to Chinatown Kid and other releases. i do remember reading somewhere that some of the original prints from the Shaw vaults were in various states of deterioration. It's too bad IVL didn't use other sources for continuity's sake, instead of leaving those segments out altogether. So far.. The Celestial dvd has a longer sequence introducing all of the bandits. And the WB VHS has the uncut love scene (the dvd fades from Jade Unicorn's practice). |

Shaolin king Boxer is a must own film. Chen kuan Tai kicks ass in this as well as Liu Chia Yung.
Return of The Deadly Blade would be better in original language. The dubs kinda of detract from this film. |
thought I would resurrect this thread for a question. lately I've been getting a lot more into the Shaw bros released by celestial picking stuff from cd-wow so mainly newer releases along with recomendation from this board and other. Now my question is, has anyone bought any of the shaw brother's dvd from Thailand and can coment on the quility of them? The prices are not too far from the HK stuff but I wanted to pick up the Brave Archer box set and possibly the One Armed Swordsman as it is cheaper than the HK ones. Also, if anyone could recommend some of the later releases as available at cd-wow that would be great.
|
On the Thai sets...
up until about two batches ago, the Thai DVDS were done on DVD-5s, while the HK DVDs were DVD-9s. The HK dvds held up better image wise due to this. Now they both us the DVD-5s. But both the boxsets you mentioned would be affected.

I just read a review of a recent Hong Kong Legends release for a film called "Hapkido". It seems very promising, but since I'm a bit of a newbie to this stuff, I'd like to get some more input if possible.....DVDTalker Linn1 (or anyone else), would you please provide some thoughts on the film? It's available via CD-WOW but a little pricey (approx. $23) and I know if I wait it'll come down in price in a few months.
KFC Cinema film/DVD review for "Hapkido" The trailer can be seen at hongkonglegends.co.uk (just click on "trailers" towards the top right). From what I gather, the IMDb entry is "He Qi Dao" (1972). |
Wow. Holy thread-that-would-not-die Batman.
Cool. Unfortunately I have been out of the loop for a while. From reading the thread, it looks like I need to get back into it though. Should there be any updates to the first post? Bueller? Bueller? |
it's great to know that there are still fans of old school kung fu.........
i didnt know that there are still many avid old school kung fu fanatics......................................i also have around 10 old school kung fu films, mostly shaw bros like....... dirty ho. 8 diagram pole fighter, 36th chamber of shaolin, five venoms, come drink with me,one armed swordsman. i also have the master of the flying guillotine.......... on order.......dragon inn {1967} by panmedia................ |
Just a note, that actually there is a sequel to this thread that can be found at the link below. It would probably be more appropriate to continue any discussion there. I would have done the same with my earlier post but I had some trouble find the sequel thread in a search. Since some people have expressed interest in this thread I decided to dig out the other one, so here you go:
Return of the One-and-Only Old School HK Kung Fu thread "Dragon Inn" (1967) is a great film and I enjoyed it much more than the re-make. If I remember right, I enjoyed "Dragon Inn" as much if not more perhaps than "Come Drink With Me". Technically I don't think we are allowed to talk about the PanMedia release, but if I recall correctly there is an official German release of the film...basically the only official release so far. To continue the discussion of Director King Hu ("Come Drink With Me", "Dragon Inn", "A Touch of Zen"), there is also an English-subbed French DVD release of his "Raining in the Mountain". I thought the film was decent but not up to the level of "Come Drink With Me" or "Dragon Inn". Also, I'll put forth that those who enjoyed "Come Drink With Me" and "Dragon Inn" might also enjoy the IVL release of "14 Amazons" (even though it is a cut version). "14 Amazons" isn't in the same category of martial arts films such as "36th Chamber", etc., etc., but from a general film perspective it is great and definitely very, very high on the list of my favorite IVL Shaw Bros. releases. Anyway, the next time I have anything to say on the kung fu front, I'll do it in the "Return" thread. |
Yep,
and considering the creators of the German DVD have come on a couple of forums and complained about the Panmedia bootleg, I wouldn't post that you bought it. Actually, it's just another example of kung fu bootlegs (Pan Media/Red Sun are perhaps are most at fault, having shut off at least three companies so far) killing off a source of films for fans. Because of this very bootleg, and the fans buying it (largely because stores like HKFlix support them), the German company is no longer putting out English subbed DVDs. :( And they are releasing some GREAT films.
As for Hapkido, it's a good film along the lines of Fist of Fury in style, but I'd just wait for the HK dvd and save yourself some money. Go ahead and get the new HK DVD of Broken Oath though to tide you over. As for King Hu, most of his films haven't gotten the respect they deserve with DVD releases. If you like his early stuff, you need to find Fate of Lee Khan and Valiant Ones. |

Man, this thread is an uber downer given the recent passing of Sifu Linn (aka DVDTalker Linn1 aka Linn Haynes…for any newbies who might be reading). Talk about going from the penthouse (Linn) to the outhouse (me) for some feedback on this. What to do…
I actually got around to picking up the UK release of HAPKIDO not too long back (since it came down drastically in price and because the announced R1 release had not yet materialized). I was quite happy with the disc (it looked fine to me) but keep in mind I am much more lax when it comes to technical A/V requirements as compared to most others around here. I’m not aware of any other English-friendly releases (though I haven’t followed it too closely since picking up the UK release). On the off-chance that you can read Japanese subs, there was a recent R2 Japan release (but not English-friendly as far as I know, and I don’t know that it was any better than the UK release anyway). I’m surprised a R3 HK release hasn’t turned up yet. As for the film itself I thought it was just okay. Have you picked up the R3 HK BROKEN OATH disc yet? I liked BROKEN OATH significantly more than HAPKIDO so for an Angela Mao fix that is what I’d recommend first. I also have the HK release of another Angela Mao film WHEN TAEKWONDO STRIKES but I haven’t watched that one yet (and I’m not certain if the disc is anamorphic…though it is at least OAR as far I recall). Back to HAPKIDO, I seem to recall that the R1 release from Dragon Dynasty was supposed to appear last Fall sometime but then it just sort of disappeared. If I were a betting man, I suppose it should turn up sooner rather than later (and HKFlix is showing a tentative October date for the Dragon Dynasty release…though I don’t know how much faith to put in that particular date). So being robbed of the luxury of deferring to Linn for a better informed answer, that’s the best I can offer. |
Thanks for the info. flixtime. Much appreciated.

that is indeed sad news about Linn. he was definitely THE go-to-guy for anything old school kung fu. his expertise and friendly demeanor will sorely be missed. |
