Region 3 DVDs Playing On Region 1 Player...What's Up?

I just popped in a Region 3 copy of CTHD, and it played fine on my Region 1 player. What's up with this? Does this mean that a region 2 will play in the player? Has anyone heard anything like this before?!?!?!?

There are two R3 versions of CTHD. One is actually regionfree despite saying R3 on the backcover. Since R3 DVDs are NTSC, that is why it plays fine on your R1 player.

Actually, that's not completely accurate. If your DVD is labeled 'Region 3', but you can play it on an unmodified Region 1 player, you own a bootleg.

The REAL region 3 disc will NOT play on region 1 players. I have tried this myself.

Actually it's never been proven that the R3 version that's actually regionfree is a bootleg. I have the R3 encoded disc so I don't know what the regionfree one looks like but according to the huge CTHD thread that was in the Talk thread awhile back, there has been no proof the regionfree version is indeed a bootleg. For all I know, it's a Columbia mastering defect.
