There was talk a while back that Germany (Region 2, PAL) was going to be getting a better version of DUNE -- the 2000 miniseries version.

Looks like it is now released:

http://www.amazon.de/exec/obidos/ASI...625138-4680538

Seems to be anamorphic, 5.1, and is 273 minutes long. Babelfishing the extras results in "different cinema and graduation Trailer, The Making OF Dune: The vision of the film producers, the history of production, photo gallery".

The US version didn't have a trailer, so the extras are definitely different.

Also, the running time of 273 mins is interesting -- I thought that it was supposed to have about 20 minutes of extra footage inserted into the film, but I guess not. Although, it's always tough to tell with the PAL/NTSC runtime difference.

So, does anyone have this yet? Any reviews available? Anyone? Anyone?

Do we definately know this is anamorphic? As we all know Amazon tends to be wrong more often than not.

http://discshop.com/dvdstation/produ...pf%5Fid=500392

...it says: 1.78:1 anamorphic - which is the standard 16:9 widescreen TV AR...

...optional subtitles in many languages...

. . .

Ah well, it is Amazon you know.

I just took the US version out of the library. While the series was fairly decent, what shocked me was some of the casting decisions, especially the fact that the Fremen were all caucasian!? I find that really astounding and confusing.

Herbert goes out of his way in the book to make the point that while the Atriades are decendants of the Roman Emperors, the Fremen most definately were not caucasian, more like an asian/arab mix. I found it awfully hard to believe that a people who lived on an all desert planet for thousands of years were white.
