Popeye fans.

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...500_AA300_.jpg Popeye Vol. 3: "Let's You and Him Fight!"
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...SH20_OU01_.jpg Popeye: "Plunder Island" (Vol. 4)

These two volumes of E.C. Segar's Popeye comic strips (Fantagraphics) are currently being offered by an Amazon marketplace seller for $9.95 and $4.95 respectively. Both are listed as "new". I purchased both for $22.00 and change delivered. It's a great deal for Popeye fans in the market for reproductions of these great comic strips but I'd act fast. I don't know if they are mis-listed or if the quantities are going to be pretty limited.

Its probably priced right. That seller specializes in overstock. Could have remainder marks but may not. They look like nice books though. So they usually have a limited number of overstock copies for sale.

These are pretty tasty too, just in a different way. (They're a lot lighter in fat and cholesterol as well! :D2: )

It looks like the same merchant is selling several volumes of the Dick Tracy series as well for $5.95.

Re: Popeye fans.

how bad is shopworn? A lot of the dick tracy are labeled as shopworn.

Re: Popeye fans.

I don't know. Maybe corners are slightly bent or it shows slight wear from being shelfed and re-shelfed. How I'd look at it is, the merchant is rated high with a lot of transactions under their belt, the books are still rated "new-very good" and the price is lower than you're going to find anywhere else. (if not ever) If you want any of them, I'd grab them.

Re: Popeye fans.

98 percent isnt that great for amazon. They are a trustworthy store but the condition is an unknown factor.

Re: Popeye fans.

"New--very good" is a $9.94 gamble I'm willing to take on at least one volume. It's not going to bother me if it's not totally pristine.

I ordered some. I hope shopworn is acceptable to me. The price is good.

Was looking for a nice retro ceiling fan. Thread fails to deliver. :(

Re: Popeye fans.

I'm glad I grabbed what I did when I did because everything from the merchant noted above appears to be gone. There is another merchant out there who listed since last night selling a few of these at similar prices. Maybe these deals are a final sign of an inventory dump as these titles go out-of-print.

I'll pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today.

Re: Popeye fans.

Had the thread been about chicken, the title would have read "Popeyes fans." Now all of you put your chicken down and check out some of his comic strips! -wink-

Re: Popeye fans.

Just got notice that the merchant cancelled my Dick Tracy order which really stinks. They sent notice that they shipped only one of the two Popeye titles so I can just hope for the best that the 2nd title will follow and not be cancelled. They were part of the same order and the price seemed too good to be true so I'm not holding my breath.

Re: Popeye fans.

They canceled one of my popeyes. Havent had any dick tracy cancelled yet. They canceled popeye volume 4, the cheaper one. I got notice that they shipped everything and then a refund for that. Why dont they just cancel before saying they shipped it. Amazon has a new charge when ship system. They are doing this wrong.

mikelz777 04-29-10 07:32 PM

Re: Popeye fans.

Which Popeye did they cancel? I got notice that vol.3 shipped. Vol. 4 with the cover picture of the Sea Hag hasn't shipped but they haven't sent cancellation notice on it. (yet) The Dick Tracy they cancelled on me was vol. 8 with Prune Face on the cover.

g 04-29-10 07:34 PM

Re: Popeye fans.

They refunded me for Popeye volume 4. They told me they shipped dick tacy vol.8 and I ordered after you. But I may see a refund for that too.

Re: Popeye fans.

Just got my notice on the 2nd Popeye title cancellation. Can't say that I care much for the way this merchant operates especially when your Tracy vol. 8 apparently shipped and mine was cancelled when I ordered before you, it's pretty jank. I see on their web site that the Tracy vol. 8 and the Popeye vol. 4are both available for $19.95.

g 04-29-10 08:04 PM

Re: Popeye fans.

They actually just sent me a refund for that Dick Tracy. I don't know why they say they ship stuff. I bought some of the other tracys. I guess I'll get those shopworn ones.

Re: Popeye fans.

They canceled portions of my order too. They're calling them out of stock. I'm suspicious though because both the books canceled were listed at less than 5% of their $150 MSRPs.

Moments after posting the above I received cancellation notices on all abut one of the books I ordered. The same books are listed on their website at higher prices. These guys are super unprofessional.

Re: Popeye fans.

It's really disappointing that this turned out to be a semi-total bust. I ordered both Popeyes and vol. 7 of Dick Tracy and I'm only ending up with one of the three. Subsequently, I tried ordering the same volume of the Dick Tracy from another source and had that order cancelled by the vendor as well. It's apparent that they are listing the book(s) for sale at multiple locations and can't always fulfill their offers which really stinks. Guess I'll have to sit tight, wait for the next bargain to come around and hope the timing works out right.

I received the one Popeye book that Hamilton Books did come through on today. I'm happy with their promptness as well as with the quality of the book. It was in brand-new condition with the exception of the back cover which looked as if it had been moved around on a dusty surface which soiled it a bit. It looks like a bit of wiping with a damp cloth should take care of most of that. For the price, I'm very happy with what I got.

The teaser prices they offered on the Dick Tracy books got me hungry for those books of which I ordered 3 from 3 different vendors ranging from $8.00 to $14.00. Not quite the deals Hamilton was offering before cancelling the order but relatively good compared to prices I've seen out there. We'll see how those deals turn out, hopefully good as the deal with the Popeye book.
