I did exactly what it said on the first page. However I was logged out of my account before proceeding through the steps listed. Once I added Pride and Prejudice to my cart and logged back into my account the offer was there for a one month free trial.

Don't forget to clear your cookies before trying it again. I tried once without doing so, it didn't work. I cleared cookies and restarted the browser and it worked fine.

I get the offer, but once I try to redeem it, it tells me in my cart that I'm not eligible.

Yeah, this is the message I get (after I cleared my cache):
"We were unable to start your Amazon Prime Free Trial
Our records indicate that you have previously been a paid or trial member of Amazon Prime. Free trials are currently available to new members only, but you may sign up at our regular rate of $79/year to enjoy Free Two-Day Shipping."

I think I'll hold off on this. I only bought Heathers Blu with my last Prime membership. I don't want to spoil this for when it really matters -- BF!

Just added a new 3-month trial after my ended on 12/22 (Trial Membership Dates: November 27, 2005 - March 29, 2010) ...
You DO NOT have to buy the book to get the trial. Logging out of your account is recommended, but still might work without doing so.
- Click and add "Pride and Prejudice" to your cart
- Click the 'Add to Cart with FREE Two-Day shipping' button on the right side of the page
- Click 'Proceed to Checkout' button
- Log in with your account if not already
- Review the details and 'Start my free trial'
Again, if you don't plan on upgrading after the trial:
Your Account --> Manage Prime Membership --> Do Not Upgrade --> Turn Off Auto-Upgrade
You're welcome.

(I get offered 1 month. When I log in as my wife, who orders FAR less frequently, she gets offered 3 months.)

The listing for that Pride and Prejudice book has changed. You can no longer order it new from Amazon, and the listing now says the following:
Item Under Review
While this item is available from other marketplace sellers on this page, it is not currently offered by Amazon.com because customers have told us there may be something wrong with our inventory of the item, the way we are shipping it, or the way it's described here. (Thanks for the tip!)
We're working to fix the problem as quickly as possible.

After using two 3-month trials over the past year, I finally signed up at the regular $79 price. My mower broke down, so I had them overnight a nearly 100 pound mower to me for $3.99 to get it in time to mow this weekend.

When I still had Prime I ordered the giant Lego Millennium Falcon which normally costs well over $30 to ship ground. 3.99!
If I could get a trial going to see if they use A1 or not, I'd consider going back. But it's been almost 10 months since I've regularly used them so I'm not going to revert now and pay the $79 on blind faith.

Amazon was using a racket called LaserShip around here. They would deliver late and then alter their tracking to show on-time delivery.

I had a few issues with their lack of tracking - and just plain wrong info - but on a couple of occasions I did get my items in one day.
