New ones (5992 model number) are $40 at Costco. They're clearing them out.
I got a bad one (it would randomly freeze or not display a picture via HDMI until you unplugged it and plugged it back in) so it was nice being able to return it to Costco. The one I have now is a very good player with lots of features. However both were mechanically very noisy when the laser seeks, such as when changing chapters, going to the menu, etc. And both emitted a lot of RF at low AM frequencies (around 600-700 kHz) and made listening to stations in those frequencies impossible to unpleasant within about a 10' radius. With those caveats I do recommend it and it's my favorite low-cost player at the moment. |

Thanks, I bought 3. Works really well, even with old crappy DVDs....Men in Black II, I talking to you. :)
Now I just have to figure out how to make it region free. |

To make Philips DVP 5992 region-free:
1. Press the Eject buttom so the tray opens. 2. Press Setup 3. Select the Preference Tab 4. Press 1,3,8,9,3,1 5. Press Up/Down key to select "0" 6. Press Menu to exit. |

The one off ebay did like you say freeze, have to unplug plug just to eject the dvd. Called Philips, they are sending a replacement out in 10 business days and are including a label to return the defective one. No real issue other than being without for a couple weeks while I wait for the replacement to come. |

I got my player from buy.com last week, it didn't come with a remote control, but i called Philips and they are sending one out to me (said it would take 20 days).
I'm very happy with the player thus far, the upconversion looks great on my HDTV and it's quieter than my old Philips. |

Is the 5992 markedly superior to the 5982? I'm buying a HD TV this weekend (finally!) and am wondering if I should upgrade my 5982.

I'm not sure, but it might just be the difference in the USB ports going from 1.1 to 2.0.
