I found an open box HD-DVD player at Best Buy for $30. I was just looking for one for out bedroom, so that price was perfect.

It didn't have a remote, manual, cables or power cord, but I survived without all of that. I programmed our Harmony remote with no issues, had a spare power cord laying around from an old satellite receiver, had a spare HDMI cable from a satellite box hooked up to an old TV that only has component, and I downloaded the manual online. So even though it was missing lots of extras, it didn't cost me an extra dime.

Not sure how many similar deals might be out there.

wow, good deal. i imagine hd-dvd can play regular dvds? i have a hdtv and no hd-dvds, but i guess hd-dvd player can suit my purpose just as well. never thought about that. thats a real good idea. need to find a similar deal though where i can get it cheap, either open box, and major discount.

recently got a blu-ray player for my main tv downstairs and its amazing.

thanks for the advice.

^

The Toshiba XA-2 is highly regarded as the best upconversion player. A lot of FYE locations have the XA-1 for $99. If you have a Backstage Pass, it would be $89. Great upconversion, great CD playback, HD-DVD capability and built like a tank. Good luck.

Since we're talking upconverting players, can anyone recommend one that upconverts through component cables? My HDTV doesn't have an HDMI input.
